ok i saw a maxima broke down on the side of the road, it was a 95-96 and it had clear outs on the tails. The only thing was that the bottom inner 'square' was still red. Is it possible to make clear outs using the same principle as the red/clear tails?

Nope, not if you have a 95. The orange part can't be taken out like in the 97+. The only way to do it is to get all clear tails and paint the bottom part red.

yeah, that's right, only the outers are sold clear. Sucks that we have to buy a whole new headlight(arghh "taillight") housing instead of being able to modify our own...

alternative on clear/red tails

Unfortunately, DavidL is not making them anymore and someone just bought his last set. From the photo someone just recently posted, it looks like a production quality part. Too bad they're now out of production.

I've heard the problem with painting the bottom part red on the full clear tails is that they don't look like the stock red color. But of course, this depends on what paint you get and how you apply it.

I have an alternative I'm going to try, though. GodFatherCustoms sells the complete clear tails for $135. My plan is to first try PlasiKote #300 Candy Apple Red plastic paint. It's supposed to look very much like the stock red OEM tails.

If that doesn't work, then the next alternative is to cut the clear turn signal part from the full clears, cut the OEM tails, and glue in the new clear turn signal lens. At least this way you get a very authentic looking lens, rather than that cheap looking fluorescent light lens look. And you've got a properly contoured surface too.

Hey id be down for cutting and pasting, lol!!
maybe ill try that, after you of course
But first im gonna experement on my clear/red tails from David L. I need to get rid of that clear rim around the edge of the taillight. Im gonna put a light coat of red-paint on the outside and see how it comes out and if i dont like then a lil Acetone will clean it right up.

I painted the outside of mine and they have held up for almost 2 years. They have just recently started to fade around the perimeter but nothing a little touch up won't fix. Here is a pic if you wanna see.

Re: alternative on clear/red tails

Darn.. I wanted to get david's red/clears... Does anyone know (or david, tell us..) what paint he used for the red part? Brand name, etc... Your procedures would be VERY thankful..... I guess I'll have to paint thems my self..

I put in an e-mail request to David for that info. I heard from Greg that he used PlastiKote #300 and he says he'd rather use something else (probably suffers from that "pinkish red" look). Unfortunately, both of these guys have hung up their hats on doing the clear/red 95-96's.

So if you do them yourself with the APC clears...where do you buy them from? Saw a couple of sets on ebay for just over $100. How much are they if you buy them elsewhere?

Ouch. These guys are expensive. Paint is $30 a can, and light bulbs are top end of the market.
