My 97 wont start, what should I look for?

Since we got the 97 SE 1/2 a year ago its been having starting issues on occasion, especially in extreme heat. Whenever you start it, there is a loud whine from the starter, and sometimes it requires 2-3 turns of the key to start it.

Well today when I tried to start it, I turned the key, it cranked for 1 second, and all of a sudden the noise from the starter dissappeared and the car wouldn't start. I tried turning the key several times after that and nothing happened. I could hear a slight hum when I turn the key (no clicking sounds), but other than that no noises from the motor.

I have yet to check the battery, but the battery should be good since its a pretty new AC Delco. All the lights are working, however I will check it tomorrow. Is there anything else I can check? Some local maxima guys suggested changing the plugs, cleaning the TB & IACV, trying to tap and/or regrease the starter, or check if the solenoids are gone.

That humming sound is the starter spinning freely. That starter is dead. Try tapping it with a metal screwdriver and see if it catches.

yeah, i think you have a starter problem. it seemed like the bendix spring that engages the starter gear into the flywheel was messing up, but now the newest problem may be something else. i wonder if there is a fuseable link that may have blown, but i don't know the electrical system well enough.

Ok thanks guys. I'm going outside now to tap the starter and see if it'll start. Tomorrow morning I'll check the battery.

if you still hear in humming and lights work, chances are your battery is fine. Sounds like a starter problem to me

Thanks for the advice/help guys. I was able to source out a rebuilt oem nissan starter within 1 day for $170CAD taxes in, (thanks to my 3rd gen friend Will), and I installed it last night and the car started beautifully.

I knew it was the starter after I tried hitting the old one with a screw driver, and it almost started.

Installation was easier than I thought. Thanks again guys!
