sorry i know this doesn't pertain to our cars but i figure someone knowledgable might be able to answer my question. my buddy has a 6speed g35 coupe which has developed at a rattle at idle, which goes away when he depresses the clutch. he says its coming from directly underneath the car. he said maybe its his stillen exhaust rattling against something but i don't know why an exhaust rattle would stop if he put his clutch down. anyone have any ideas?

 

that means its probably coming from the transmission

That is a common things with Nissan's and my friends 03 Z does it too. My car has been doing it for a long time now. It is most likely the input shaft bearings. Now I have heard different things on this. I have heard about and from guys who were really concerned about the noise and the bearings and were sure their tranny was gonna go at anytime....but the noise stayed for years and nothing ever developed of it. But I have also heard, not first hand just heard, of complete tranny failure because of it. But like I said, mine has been doing it for a long time and the bearings are still doing their job.

 

I had the same problem and was told it was the input shaft bearing.

 

and how do you know its not actually a problem inside the tranny?

Nissan's dont have the strongest transmissions you know....

 

chances are, it is

 

so can he get it fixed under warranty? is infiniti or nissan even doing anything about the problem? the car has under 15k miles...and if its a known problem that causing transmission failure in some cars then i'm surprised they haven't done something to take care of the issue.

Seriously, especially the Sentra's Tranny, I've heard they go at teh drop of a hat. I believe the ones on the Spec V

 

Don't jump to any conclusions. 350Z/G35s make drivetrain noise without any problems (well documented, indicates no problems, found in both brand new cars and brand new transmissions if they happen to have a newer trans in the car than the car itself) could be that, and nothing to worry about.

 

My car has the same, but sometimes its kinda whine-y.... If its in neutral just idleing it there, as soon as you push the clutch in its gone. Would this be something that will be covered under the powertrain warranty???
