The dreaded clunking from the front strut...D2 owners step in...

Hey folks, I need some help from those of you with the D2's. I recently put them on and have been hearing a licht clanking noise when going over bumps or rought terrain. I am guessing this is my strut blown, but before I put the coilovers on I did the compression test on all of the coilovers and the only one which did not rebound properly I sent back to get rebuilt. My question is how long do these usually last before they blow and does this sound like my strut is blown. It almost sounds like there is something loose clanking around when I hit some rough roads or bumps. Everything has been tightened, and the only visible problem is that my rubber boots are torn. Also I tried to do the rebound test with the D2's on the car yesterday and they are so stiff we can't even get the car to move much, so I am not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated!!

Hey, I occasionally have the same problem, I was able to find that the colar that keep the spring from moving up and down was too loose, so what I did is screw the colar so the spring get thight, I believe some call this " Pre load " also there is the flimsy rubber that get torn after a while so the best way to cure that is to replace the rubber by better one and be shure to tight the colar so the spring cant move up and down. Doing so remove 95% of the noise. Good luck.

All my collars are tight and I have put a little preload on the spring. I will pull my wheel off and check again this weekend, but I don't think that is the problem with mine....

It's very important to grease the pillow ball with some anti-cease grease ( is that a word ? ), otherwise it will make all kind of weird noise. Also check the rubber gasket, those are really crappy and need to be replace with more robust one, I mean if the spring rub against the aluminum seat or top part of the D2 that will obviously make some noise. One last thing is the strut mount that might be done, when I put the D2 in both rear strut mount where damage so I had to replace both.

you also need to REALLY tighten down the bottom bracket with the alan screws... I have found that they loosen up and start to make noise and allow the strut to flex.

I just called UI today about it because I now have some the screw heads striping I have to tighten them so often. they said they are going to look into it and call me back...

ok, so i took a look at everything tonight and i'm glad to say i fixed the problem. the problem was the bolt on the top of the coilover assembly not being tight enough, which led to the clunking noise as the whole assembly was moving up and down over bumps. i love these coilovers now that i have everything set up and looking/sounding good!!

I changed my allen screws out with some 316 stainless ones I got from my local hardware store. I don't remember what size they were, but just take one off and take it with you to find out. SS should hold up very well overtime and better yet it won't rust into place making it almost impossible to remove without stripping.

I am getting a mad clunking noise from my right, front..I've been meaning to go through my setup to ensure everything is tight and change out the rubbers. Haven't gotten to it yet. Hopefully sometime soon....

If you haven't already pop the hood and check the top bolt on the coilovers, if they are not tight the assembly will move up and down on rough pavement and you will get crazy clunking noises.

hi, everyone, this is my first post here, I hope I'm in the right section. I bought my 2001 Ann. Ed. last december, and I absolutely adore it. Sure, it has a few irritating things, just like any other car, but overall GREAT car. However...one extremely irritating problem is starting to get to me, a front end clunking noise when I drive slowly over bumpy pavement (such as a parking lot), or over the entrance to a driveway. Its kind of a ka thunk ka thunk noise. Its worse when the wheels are turned. The car has about 74,000km on it (about 46,000miles). The dealer has replaced the sway bar end links, which stopped the noise for about 2 months. Then they changed the lower control arms, told me it might be the ball joints. That lasted about 4 months. Over the past week it started coming back and now its louder than the first time. I have extended warranty, so its not costing me, but its annoying how they seem to just change what "they think it might be". I need some help with this please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance....
