CAN I PUT WIDER TIRES ON MY 7 WIDE RIMS?

My car has a wheel width of 7 inches. My friend said his were 7 inches also and he put wider tires on his car. Is he full of crap? Is it safe to do?

Do you have the factory GXE wheels? If so I'm relatively sure they are 6.5" wide not 7". As for the wider tires, I think 1 size larger is relatively safe, but will look different on the rim.
