how on earth to remove front left o2 sensor on 98 max?!?

i received my new o2 sensor today... went to go put it in but to my surprise theres no way in hell of getting any tools near the sensor... its surrounded on all sides by frame, engine, exhaust pipes! Anyone know of a writeup to removing the front left o2 sensor on a 98? My car is Cali spec, dunno fi that makes a difference on removal though...

All i see in sticking is writeups for 95-96.. any help appreciated, thanks.

You should be able to get a wrench or an O2 sensor socket on it...

Renting a o2 socket tool from autozone or local participating parts store should help do the trick, and some penetrating oil wouldnt hurt.

i bought an o2 socket and was able to get it on there fine. i had to put the socket on the o2 first, then click in the wrench but also used a piece of pipe as a breaker bar to help. it was pretty easy overall...and my last tank i got 28mpg as opposed to the 22/23 i've been getting for a while.

$15/day?? doesn't sound right....u pay for it, but they'll give u a refund once u bring it back with the receipt....u can keep it as long as u want, since u practically paid for it...u jus get ur money bak whenever u decide to return it

The left o2 sensor, the one near the radiator? I removed mine from under the car. First remove the plastic under tray , then the o2 sensor. An o2 sensor socket is a definite plus.

I used penetrating oil on it first, waited 15min, then used a long open wrench on it. You only get a few degrees of movement. I didn't buy the 02 socket tool till I installed the new one.

What size was the socket you guys used? I've only found 7/8 sockets but they seem to be too big? I'd love to find one that fits. Thanks.

also dont forget to apply anti-sieze to the threads of the o2 sensor and the bung so it will be easier to remove in the future....

ok, I've read a bunch on the o2 sensors and bought the front 2. I'm planning on changing them tomorrow BUT I can't find where the front 2 are! I found the back one but that's not the one I'm changing! I read the chiltons book but that doesn't help too much - it just explains HOW to change them.

Also, do I need to put the car up? I'm going to try and do this on the ground...

Thanks!

Hello,

I have found 3 in the car, Maxima 99 GLE: One that you can see from the front of the car close to the radiator. The othe one you can only see from underneath the car and the Downstream which is kind of towards the back end of the car. Which is the Bank 1 Sensor 1, which in the manual is also referred to as right bank?

Welcome to the ORG. The Bank 1, Sensor 1 is the one in the Y-pipe closest to the firewall. There are two upstream of the catalytic converter, as you have noticed. The one you need to replace is the one closest to the firewall (not the one closest to the radiator).

bank 1 sensor 1 is the middle one right between the two front wheels. the connector is on the top part of the motor near the passenger seat.

Thank you very much. A picture's worth 1 million words. I have already loosened it and I am ready to remove it. I followed the thread and I find it between the radiator and the spark plugs cover, in a bank of 4 connectors right beside the the spark plugs cover. How do I unplug it? I don't see any catches and I am afraid to pull on it for I might break it. Could you help me out with this?

There is a slight trick to it. When i did it, i was trying to pry apart the wrong piece. I can tell you that you pull out a pretty big part of the plug. The one you pull out is the female one. It basically goes above almost the whole connector on the car. Its more of a socket looking thing that you remove. Im away from my car right now so i cant take a pic but if you could wait till tomorrow i would be happy to show you a pic. If you want a pic email me @ wgordils@optonline.net and when i check my email tomorrow i can remember to go take a pic of it. if you dont want to wait try to remove it but remember that its not that difficult. When you try to connect the new one, remember not to plug it in the socket and then try to screw it on because it can cause tension and break the wire. Let it kinda sit on top of the spark plug covers and screw the bottom piec on the y pipe first. I know i kinda went alittle bit ahead of you but i just didnt want to forget to tell you later.

Thank you for providing me your email address. I did find the way to unplug it, though. Now I am desperate. I bought me a Universal Oxigen sensor to install. The problem is that the oxigen sensor in the car has got 4 wires and the Universal oxigen sensor has only 3. Also, since the Universal oxigen sensor doesn't have a connector, the connector from the original cable, the one in the car, must be used by matching and connecting the wires in both cables. Have you ever encounter a situation like this? Does this disparity matters? Or can I just skip the fourth wire?

You cannot skip the fourth wire. Either get a universal with 4 wires or get the OEM replacement.

You are absolutely right! I went ahead and bought the original, same brand and everything, installed it, unplugged the battery to reset the computer for about a half an hour and the sensor light still comes on. Is there anything else I can do or haven't done?

Reset the CEL using the procedure in the stickies. That will turn off the light.

Found it, thank you! I believe I have broke the little screw because I can't see it or feel it :-( I guess I am going to have to buy me a Code reader. Only problem is I don't see in my car the Data Link Connector (DLC) For a Maxima 99 GLE, where is the DLC?

A million thanks to all of you! The light is out. Do not know what I did specifically, I run the car a little bit, I touchd some fuses, didn't unplugged them though. Who knows? One thing is certain. I would have never be able to do it without your help. Thank you.
