4th Gen Manual tranny vs. 6th Gen 5-speed Auto

Which transmission in a 4th gen Maxima with a full 3.5 swap do you think would be faster?

Not worried about having a manual vs auto-tragic, just what you think is faster/better

The 5M from the 4th gen since it's more effecient.

6M is better for gas mileage, but not by much, and is also geared pretty high (not agressive). Only @ speeds 110-120 + will it have an advantage, and it's a small advantage at that.

MPH @ 6500

2nd --70----------67
3rd --102---------94
4th---137--------124
5th --164--------164
6th--------------208

6M--------2340

In that case still the 5M since it's more effecient and works more easily as far as electronics are concerned.

So form what I'm reading you think the 5M would be better on gas how about just based on speed? Looks from the ratios it could be tight, no?

Yes, but the 5M is more effecient therefore more power will be getting to the ground, though the 5A will be more consistent, the 5M will depend on the driver.

Also, the 5A is a whole new set of as.s bags considering the wiring, this is of course if you're transplanting into a 4th gen.

Swapping in a 5A would be a PITA. The wiring would be a nightmare. You would have to convert to a gated shifter. I can't even imagine it being worth it to convert from 4A to 5A.

The 6M might be worth it with a more aggressive final drive. What maxima or even a 350Z would be going 208mph? That is ridiculous. The gearing on the 6M is just not spaced well and has a lot more drivetrain loss since it has 8 gears to be constantly meshed (6 + 2 reverse) as opposed to the 5 the 5M has.

The best swap is the 00-01 5 speeed. It is the strongest tranny while still being pretty much bolt on.

Also, the 6th gen has a more agressive F/D, sorry, I did not put that into consderation, as those comparisons are with the 5.5g 6M, but it doesn't matter since he was asking about the 5M and 5A ...

5g 5M =

I'm sorry... anyone who voted for the auto here just has no idea what they're talking about.

Heavier, MUCH more drivetrain loss..... 'nuff said.

From the thread title, it's a little miss leading with the choices between 4th gen 5mt versus 6th gen 5at. I paused for a couple of seconds, my mistake. Since you are doing a swap, get manual either 5mt for speed or 6mt better mpg. And like NmexMAX wrote:

It's theoretical , and derived from given equations .... It doesn't take into account tachometer/speedometer error & drag, sag .. etc.

Regardless of which is faster, I prefer using both hands and feet to drive.

Manual gives a lot more control and it is much more fun to drive. (Of cause if you know how to drive it)

I also have unconfirmed information that manual transmission transmits more power to the wheels and it can be shifted quicker than your automatic.

Manual obviously puts more power to the ground as its a mechanical tranfer of power rather than an automatic which hydraulic based.

IIRC manual has a 15% power loss and Auto has 23%

umm just a question, but why do you want to do this? if you have a manual, it will be much easier to just stick with it, and it will be faster if you are a decent shift...auto likely to last longer for the poor driver/shifter...and likely more work installing if ya think about wiring and such.

VQ35 and 5-speed tranny in a 4th gen is a ton of fun, unless torque steer bothers you.

why not an 5spd ae 01 or the 5spd canadian 00-01 trans , i know theyre harder to find but the lsd would be worth the extra trouble imo.

curious to know why 6M tranny from the 5.5g isn't put into consideration? am i missing something? i think i'll want to do this swap in the near future and it would be much easier to stick wiht my 5M but the 4th gens with 3.5L will feel much more of a power diff compared to my 5th gen with 3.5L
