regarding the air bags...

when working around the immeadate area of the air bags (ie steering wheel, center consol, etc) the Haynes manual highly highly recommends that we disconnect the air bags to prevent any accidental deployment.
has anyone had any problems with their airbags? or is there anything really to be worried about ?

Just use your instints... the air bag controller in under the center console - so the warning is precautionary. I tend to disconnect the battery and let the car sit for a few mins before playing around with any of the electrical stuff. It's too easy to short wires, etc. It takes just a few seconds to disconnect the battery - so there is no reason not to do it.

its in your best interest to, especially if you'll be working near the airbags themselves or the controller.
