exhaust leak near manifolds
ok i have a leak somewhere, sounds like it's the rear manifold, probably the gasket. anyone here ever change them? i had the car on a lift and that's where it sounds like it's coming from. I have a VE and i have HEARD that studs aren't as big a problem for them. anyone ever change out one of these manifold gaskets yourself? any idea on price from a dealer? thanks guys.

It's more than likely one or more broken exhaust manifold studs. Check to see that all of them are there. They usually break on either end of the manifold.
I have a VE and I had broken ones on both sides.

I changed front and rear manifoldgasket.
if you have possibility to use a lift try to do it
yourself ,than the cost is little gasket and studs only
the rear manifold is more difficult, little space
for broken studs you need a little (air)drillingmachine.
drill a small hole in the stud and take it out with a
left tap.
check after dismantling the manifold,if neccecerry take
away the heat shield .
i had a big crack in it.
tip : i took a small part from the exhaust pipe what is
connecting the two manifolds and put a flexible pipe
(SINK or STAINLESS)between it and have no leakage for a
long time already
you can also do this when your flexibele part in your
exhaust start leaking ,safes a lot of guilders (dutch $)

Yeah, more than likely it is broken bolts. I have a VE also and I had two broken studs at around 139,000 miles. Cost...about $700 from Nissan dealer. Difficult job because it was the rear manifold. They quoted me between $600 and $1500 depending on whether or not they would have to remove te cylinder head to drill out the bolts, but luckily they ddn't have to. Good luck bro!
manifold leak
The real possiblity is that its the studs. I had about 4, maybe 5 studs break completely off, and when the nice man replaced them he obviously does the gaskets. I think the studs and two gaskets came out to be maybe 18 bucks, but the labor (he worked for about $65/hour) totaled to about $600. This is mostly because of all the labor just to get to the part. The new studs are supposed to stay there for a lifetime becuase its a totaly different metal. So far ive had no problems, and its been 10 months now.
Good luck!
