How do I change the timing in my '90 Max??

I have read about people changing the 'timing' in their engines to give more pull. Can someone please tell me what this means, and how I would go about doing it.

Just loosen the bolt and turn the Dist.
Use a timing light to retard or advance it.

where is the bolt at? and how beneficial is it on a VG?

Sorry to sound stupid, but I just got my maxima like a week ago and I really don't know anything. What bolt and what is the 'dist'?
Where would i get a timing light and how much are they?
