I should have stayed in bed...Yesterday morning I had a completely flat tire, the spare was low, and it took ages for me to get the damn thing repaired...then at lunch time
I got rear-ended by an accord while I was in Vienna, VA (Leesburg pike). He was an ER doctor getting off a 12 hour shift, and he said he spaced. He was very apologetic and even told the cop that all the fault was his, and that he would do whatever. When the cop asked me if I wanted him charged for the accident, I said no. I figure it wasn't going to help anything, and the guy was definitely being a gentleman, not a jerk. We figured he hit me at about 20 mph, but he nose-dived under my car when he braked. His airbags didn't go off and he smacked his head on the steering wheel, but beyond that we were both ok. I barely missed skidding (after being hit)into the Prelude in front of me that slamed on his brakes and prompted this ugliness; (insert choice &%@! words here for the prelude driver)...

The bottom of my bumper is scratched up, and my exhaust is kinked/bent up to that web-mesh flex area by the y-pipe. Estimates are running $1400-1600. Hopefully no frame damage or anything else significant. I feel stiff, but nothing too bad. The accord on the other hand is in bad shape...He couldn't even drive it away because the radiator leaked all it's fluid away, and the fan was catching on a belt or something like that. What's more ironic is that we were both headed to the same car delership down the road to look at cars. So much for trade-in value... I ended up giving him a lift to the dealership where he rented a car...instead of looking at new cars, I ended up visiting their body-shop. That sucked...my already worthless car is now even worse off, and my search for a repalcement is now being delayed.

Here are pictures of my car and his...Max vs. Accord...my car won this bout without a doubt. He even commented on how "obviously" more solid the Maxima was built than his car (I think it's because his crumpled like it was supposed to), but hell, I'll let him think Nissan is superior.

Sorry to hear what happened especially for the Accord guy. Your bumper doensn't look that bad. It was a good thing he took responsibilty and admitted that it was his fault.

We need more people like him. Most people don't take responsibility for $hit when they know they did something wrong these days.....

:(

At least your car doesn't look too bad, plus no one was seriously injured...and he's a doctor so he can handle it, right? ^_~ I wish your max a safe, and speedy recovery.

Thanks guys...

Estimates seem to be averaging $1400-$1600 at the body shops. My usual garage said they could do a complete exhaust job for me for $500, but can't do the bumper. I'm thinking the bumper doesn't look that bad...and I REALLY need new shocks all around, and 4 new tires, an alignment to go with the shocks...maybe keep the dinged bumper and take care of the more critical things... or find a black maxima in a salvage yard. How hard is it to remove the rear bumper & foam inserts?

Man, talk about rear-ending. I rear-ended this one guy 2 weks ago. It was all because of my aggressiveness. We were both at a light trying to merge onto the highway into the right lane, and when I saw an opening, I went for it, but forgot he was still there in front of me. I looked out for cars that were going to hit me, but didn't check out the car I hit. I felt dumb, I never been in accident in my life and never got a ticket, came close lots of times, but never did. The guy I hit was in a custom painted GTI. I admitted it was my fault, and he didn't even report it to the police. We traded info and met up the next day about payments. I bent his bumper and my car had a little scratch near the grill and thats it. I told him I'll just come up with the money for the damages and I still am till this day. Total estimate came out to $779. I didn't want to go through insurance because I know they'll jack up my premium. I'll say, I almost flipped this guy's little car over when I floored it. I guess I was being honest about admitting it and he was pretty cool about it, wasn't too mad, or maybe because he's getting over on me with the estimate.

I want to say it was the 8300 block. We ended up pulling onto an access road and I used the phone in some leather furniture store...I think there was a Merchant's tire there too. I had come off 495...he was behind me. One block prior, the idiot in front of me did a wild-last-minute right turn without signaling, so I had to hit my brakes hard. The accord almost hit me then (slammed on his brakes at the very last second) but he stoped in time, so he backed off a bit, but a block later, a similar thing happened where the guy in front of me had to brake for a car darting out onto Leesburg pike from the access road. We all slammed our brakes on again, but the accord braked with the same slow reaction time and smacked into me.

I got rear ended yesterday too by a honda minivan. I wish i had just got some bumper damage, but my frame is bent to hell in the trunk and in the rear crumple zones. My doors are all misaligned now too.
