Is there anyway to remove the timing chain cover without unmounting the whole engine? And does replacing only the tensioner cause any problems due to the offset?

you don't need to remove the cover to replace the tensioner. you can access it thru one of the access holes on the side. the problem i had when i tried to replace mine was that the replacement didn't fit...i end up putting the old one back on...

 

yeah but the bulletin says you need to replace both the tensioner and the gear to fix the rattle problem, will replacing only the tensioner do it?

taking the engine off its mount isnt a big deal. Just put a scissor jack under the oil pan with a 2X4 on top of it. Then unbolt the mount. You can raise and lower the scissor jack too. Or a floor jack...

 

supposedly, replacing just the tensioner will fix the rattle. when you order the parts from nissan it comes with the chain guide as well. you can't replace the guide thru the access hole. the new tensioner worked with the old guide for other people, but didn't for me.

Wouldn't the weight of the engine crush the oil pan?! And working on an engine outdoors is a B*tch, even somthing as simple as an oil change seems like a daunting task in 90 degrees, but knowing that the local mechanic is trying to screw me over is even more daunting
