i got 1000$ to spend or save

Hey guys, i got 1000$ to spend on either the max or just save up. Not sure what to do at this point. If i spend the $1000 i want to be at around 190whp. I'm an auto tho, and right now completely bone stock. Just wondering if i should save up some more money for bigger things.I'll be happy just being near 200 whp. if i'm not mistaking right now a stock auto would be at 160whp ? maybe 155 but yea.

Its just going to be a daily driver. Just want a little more go in the car. is $1000 acutally going to take me anywhere close to 190-200whp. I was thinking maybe doing y-pipe and a MEVI now and save up for a ECU and maybe a tranny swap later. I dont know how mucha tranny swap might be in parts and labor thats why i'm not considering it now. since a y pipe is about 200 and a MEVI is around 500. i'll spend the last 300 on lowering the car. And save up then possibly get the tranny and ECU together.

Just wanted to know what you guys would do if you were stock with 1000$ to spend.

save your money.
when I first bought my car back in 02 I spent about $1500 with suspension and some power mods and I only dyno like 181hp/187 tq and I'm a 5spd. I only had i/y/e then but that was a good $1000 there.
If you want best bang for ur money get a y-pipe. Don't get a vi until u have money for a ecu, you won't necessary gain more power with a vi but ur power band would be different. I would also get a 00vi over a MEVI, u get better gains.

I don't think the 190 or even 200 whp barrier has been crossed in a N/A auto 3.0L. So with that said, $1k wont do it.

*edit* BSwithTF did it @ 192 .. but again ...

Best advice would be to get a ypipe/vi/ECU, or SAFC combo.

Save it/invest it and wait till you have 4k to blow on ur car and more than 4 k saved up in your bank account. Then supercharge/turbocharge it. That'll get you 200+

If you ever check the all motor forum Zack342 just dynoed 201.33whp/191.27wtq MEVI/STOCK ECU. His a list of all his mods Stock ECU/MEVI/UR Underdrive Pulley/Warpspeed Y-pipe/Catco highflow cat/Greddy SP catback/Sun Automobile Hyperground system/Optima Redtop Battery. Im sure his 5 spd tho but you could prob do very close to 190 with thoes mods. Heres the link to the thread http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=423821

Yea i know thats more then 1k but if u get the 00vi thats like 600 overestimate i think not positive and then ypipe 200 and then thats some power there and eventually later on dont bother with and ecu b/c the greddy emange ultimate might be able to increase rev limit no one knows yet on a vq but that also would be close to another 1k but say 800 for 00vi or mevi and a ypipw you should be able to feel that alot.

Do y-pipe, and lower it. Being an auto is really a set back for your goal.

save your money, you can spend a little of it, but i would just go and spend all 1000 of it.

Also getting a VI does not mean you need to get a ecu. the 00vi will just add more hp, and an ecu is not necessary, they were necessary for the mevi because the mevi made our cars lose some low end power, but this is not the case with the 00vi.

If you wanted to do pure power mods with the 1000, i would get a ypipe, 00vi, and you will still have around 200 left over.

only reason why i was looking into MEVI was that i could possibly do it myslef. I don't feel too confident in drilling into my IM. Plus there are some many diffrent ways to about about a 00vi. I wouldn't trust a shop to do it. I would consider paying someone to help me install it tho. But thats all depends. I haven't read up to much about 00vi. But i think it would be a long process peiceing everything together./

lol CRX...if i had to get something in terms of another car. i would consider a s13 240sx or a 200sx. Not a crx, so reason i don't like them. And for some reason they always go for 1500$ here in chicago.

before you start doing power mods and such make sure everything in the car is sound and fit... you don't want to go get yourself that mevi, and ypipe to find out that your knock sensor and oxygen sensor are shot, and your rotors are warped beyond repair...

my tip would be use 500$ on mods (you pick) take the y-pipe, and if it makes you feel better you can set yourself up with a hybrid intake for a more aggressive sound... maybe some exhaust if you're into that.. hi flo cat.. keep the rest for repairs (other 500) .. once you raise another grand then go and treat yourself again.

this is all my opinion of course.. (just from sh*t ive learned).. as soon as you do something nice something will demand repair.

ok turtle, Dave did a 00vi swap in Ecko's car, so he is experienced with it, and im sure if you pay him a little he will help you out. i just think that the mevi is a waste of money now that we have the 00vi option.

I'm brand new to these cars, but I'm old to the world..therefor I would invest the money in something that would grow your wealth. I'm driving a 96 I30 absolutely stock, it seems quick enough for me,,last I checked the speed limit is 70. And no, I don't have any stock tips for ya.

Well actually thats one thing i learned from the past. When you start modding you start learning more and more things are wrong with your car. I have $500 already saved up for it. I'm only at 65k miles on my 98. But then again from 60-90k are where the problems start. I'm a little prepared for it.

Economics, week 2, 9th grade.

in theory, where marginal benefit < marginal cost , don't mod

but in the case of mods, there is a willingness to pay dearly.

diminishing returns

those geniuses in IT gave me a new phone, with a battery that has 50% more juice. It's like 1350 vs. the standard that has 900. But guess what, even though the juice is 50% more, the size of the battery doubled. That's called diminishing returns--not the da** phone is almost twice as thick and 2 oz. heavier. Real dumb.

^but the enjoyment of modding is worth it so some. Not all.

people mod for many diffrent reasons. You can't really say its not worth it. For example, i got a friend who isn't too smart when it comes to shopping around. He spent i think 350$ on a CAI. To me its a waste of money. But he enjoys that CAI so much, its worth it to me. Even tho he knows it could of cost so much cheaper.

as for the battery in the cell phone.. lol i cant comment on that.

What you say is totally correct. From a theory point of view, probably no mods are worth it. But the demand for the mods is not a typical demand, therefore people are willing to pay a lot for a little benefit. And in the real world, we don't have to follow theory. We can pay for something we want.

Like 18's say, we've agreed that besides lateral g's, it most likely hurts performance. But there's no question 18's look better than anything smaller, and are at the price-point. 19's and larger are still relatively expensive and show diminishing returns. But who knows, 1-3 years from now 19's could be dirt-cheap like 18's are today. Look at the trend, you can now get a BMW from the factory with 20's. So in their world, 18's are puny. 16's? fuggetiboudit.
