open exhaust after Y
open exhaust after Y
I've read a couple times that this has been done, do I need to worry about damaging anything if I do this? I was thinking opening it up after the res test pipe (where the cat would be) and using one bolt so the pipe wouldnt drag, i've got a full warpspeed setup with a cattman muffler, those that have done this did it help?
There is something you need to worry about damaging. Your eardrums. It will be ungodly loud, and provide probably zero benefit. The only guy I know of that did it said he didn't see any gain at the track. It might be worth a couple horsepower, but just a couple horsepower is usually not enough to notice at the track unless you make a ton of runs and average them all out before and after, or you are unbelievably consistent. I say don't bother.
I like to think I am unbelievably consistant. I do know my car within 3 hundredths on every single run. When I open my exhaust cutout (located in my test pipe), I shave exactly .15 in the 1/4 mile with my 23" drag radials. My 60' time doesn't get hurt noticably. Probably b/c with my high stall converter and the shorter final drive, it winds up so quick out of the hole that I don't have to worry about the powerband under 3500 rpm. But on the street, the gain in top end power is definitely there when I open my cutout. I am sucky at guessing butt dyno HP numbers. All I know is that I see a consistant ET drop of .15 when I run without open vs closed.
I agree with Aaron, because I remember somebody posted up a dyno of before/after with a cutout in the test pipe, and they gained a solid 6 whp and wtq across the powerband. I forget if the person had stock or aftermarket exhaust, but the numbers speak for themselves.
I have a cutout, but since I can't find a way to mount my electric motor, opening the cutout is a real hassle, and you pretty much need a new gasket every time you open it. When I dyno I will do a comparison. I'm sure with nitrous or FI there will be good gains, especially over stock exhaust. Now I just gotta find a way to mount the motor....

Well the loudness sounds fun til 10 pm when i'd have to button her up and I might be able to get .1 out of it, i've got some built up tension to release this weekend so as long as I know it wont screw the motor or anything its on. thinking of opening up after the test pipe though, dont think itll make any difference that 6 inches.

Of course, if your gonna make all that noise, you better be pretty quick too, or you'll probably end up looking retarded.
well I dont think i'll be impressing anyone with my quickness all I have is intake and exhaust and 18" rims, i'm just trying to see if I can get another personal best with the most basic of mods cause its gonna be a while before i get to do anything serious (lack of cash) for even a mevi let alone the engine swap i wanna do....but I digress
i'm gonna take out the seats which i've never done before and open up the pipe to see if that would get me to the lower 15's from my mid 15 best.

our cars sound ok on open ypipes. but down low there are nasty and don't start to sound good until like 5000rpms. the are loud as hell. in the car it rivals the sound level of my buddies old 69 chevelle with a 461ci big block on 3" exhaust with flowmasters dumped. insanley loud but it's ok. i'm used to loud, i can't hear anyways. i might open it up when i go to the track with my nitrous.
nah, were gonna run the night drags, gates open at 6, but everyones backed out including me, lack of funds still gonna drive up to sell my stocker wheels though...we might end up racing woodburn on the 10th of SEP, i'll let ya know.
I run my car with just open manifolds to see how bad it sounded becasue liek stated above a v6 is horrible until it is hi in the rpm band to me at least.Oh and I didnt take eveyrhting off for fun it was when i changed my manifold studs so i said what the ehck and fired it up.. was loud but a deep sound,a deep horrible sound
