On my way home from work today I was going down a two lane street with anothr car beside me in the centre lane. My lane was about to merge with the centre lane so I wanted to pass the car next to me and pull infront of him, I was going 60 kph, I steped on the accelereator and the rpm went up to about 6500 but the car would not go cause the trany didn't change gars, so I stoped on the side of the road and turned off my car and checked under the hood to see if any hoses came off or anything like that, everythig was ok so I restarted the car and drove off. The car drove fine after the short stop. I have no idea what happened. Any imput would be appreciated.
Thanx.

Ps: I drive a 94, auto.

Our cars are sometimes taken over by evil spirits. I have had the same thing happen to me, but after a while, it stops, then the ghost may come back to haunt you more.

"Safe mode"....

kicks in sometimes when the car thinks the tranny is messed up, from what I know its used in case the trans really is messed up and it locks the car in 3rd gear to allow you to "get home" or to the shop without the car totally crapping out on you...don't worry nothing is wrong, it just happens sometimes, but when it does happen just turn the car off, wait a few seconds, turn it back on and it should run fine. if it persists than you might have a problem!

I slammed on the brakes in the rain to stop at a light once and I experienced "safe mode." Not knowing what it was, I was freaked out. Once I got my trusty manual out and figured out the deal I was happy, but I still think it's a gimmicky promo option.

Thanx for the info, that's a load of my head.
I put a new trany in last year when the old one went on me.
The new one had only 50 000 Km on it, and I paid $1000 Canadian for it. I installed it with the help of my brother, and it was fine till today.

SAfe mode...? O2 sensor....?

Hmmm yeah I had this happen to me awhile back. I was actually braking for a redlight coming up and the light turned green. I then steped on the accelerator n my rpm's shot up big tyme without speed increasing. I let off a little bit to see if my tranny would kick in but nothing happened. I pulled over n checked for N E broken belts but didn't find none. Hmmm.
I then drove off n everything was fine. I just thought it was that "Safe Mode" thing but that same week I still experienced the same problem n poor shifting from the tranny n didn't know what to think. I had the thought to unplug the O2-sensor cuz I rememebered reading something about this problem n it being the O2-sensor.... I ran the car short times around the block and didn't experience the problem. I then plugged it back in and damn, I had the problem again. I then knew the O2 had problems and ordered a new sensor. I ran the car with the new 1 for a week with no problems. I had an urge to put the old 1 back in and did to shortly find out my car was running like crap again. For once I was right on the money with that 1.
Well if U do experience that prob. again, might wanna check your O2. If it is the O2 don't worry. Its not expensive, and u can even replace it yourself. Heres a pic of where the O2 plugs in.
