here's my take
The Maxima is, as we all know, a 4-door sports car. As a 4DSC, it is meant to be a daily driven family car with the guts to put a smile on the driver's face. If Nissan were to make a 2-door version of the Maxima, it would have to be a different car, ala Camry/Solara. There can be no such thing as a 2-door Max. Basically, it's a theoretical impossibility. Should Nissan even begin the planning of such a vehicle, God/Jesus/Buddha/Mohammed/David Koresh/whoever you think is the real deal, would reach down and begin a subatomic implosive chain reaction that would begin in G Dubya's colon and, within 3 or 4 seconds, spread to the end of the universe, culminating in the utter annihilation of time and space, including my beloved Maxine (and I never even got a Y-pipe).
Let's just hope it never comes to that.

at the time of the maxima inception
there was the 240 and Z.
Positioning wise...they didnt need it.
From the chassis they CAN make a 2 door max. but my .02 is that their marketing department figured they didnt need it.
*shrug*
be happy with a family sleeper car...
a max and a honda race...who gets pulled over first?

And another thing. The Accord and the Camry both have the sales volume to justify spending alot of money on developing the 2 door. Maxima's sales volume is pathetically smaller in comparison.

......which I do not understand. Camry's and Accords are so bland it is ridiculous. Why anyone would buy anything other than a Maxima SE for the money is beyond me. For 28-30K the Maxima SE is the best car for your money, period.

I wish there was a maxima coupe..
Nissan doesn't have a coupe in their lineup at all! not for the last 3 or so years at least. It's going to change with the new Z coming, but still... I think a coupe would be cool. Since the new Altima is going to be an Accord/Camry fighter, they should make a coupe too... imagine 3.5 240 hp 2 door, hmm, might give the CL a run for it's $$$
One of the cars I always wanted to get was the Acura Legend, particularily the 6spd coupe w/ 230 hp.. but couldn't afford it...
ah well. The Solara and 2dr Accord are both nice.

Camry's and Accords and Toyotas/Honda's in general are said to have better overall reliability and quality. Yes, the Maxima is a better performance car, more attractive to some etc, but not quite on the level of fit/finish quality of the Toyota's and Honda's, although close. Camry's and Accords control the midsize market, they offer a few trims to attract buyers, along with a cheaper more economical 4 cyl model, plus the coupe... Accord was introduced back in 1976 or something like that, Camry is probably just as old, they gained popularity over the years. I think a lot of their success is not that it is a "better car" but because of the Honda or Toyota name. Look at the Civic and Corolla, both outweigh Sentra's pretty bad in sales... I still think Nissan has the best styling though

Because coupes suck. There are no benefits and are less useful than a sedan.
a maxima coup wouldve been kinda hot. i always wished for a 2 door max that looked a lil like the 2 door legends with the big fenders and high hp engine. but then again someone said its a 4dsc and that wouldnt make sense which is true.i guess no one would wonder if they made a max that stylistically couldnt be challeneged. take some styling cues from the 3rd and 4th generation, engine from the 5th, suspension from the 3rd, price it at 25k,see where im goin? sales would match toyotas then cuz u cant possibly find something better than that.
yeah that was the m30. and theres an article in an old 1990 car and driver magazine that ive saved, it was a first test m30 and they stated that the m30 was old nissan while the new maxima was new nissan, better and worth the price. there was also the article on 10best onder 20k and the maxima was in there. if im not mistaking the description was a rorty kick *** engine with the best handling to ride ratio. makes me proud.

I read once about a 97 Max "Fit and Finish is as good as the best luxury car." And I think they are all about equally reliable.

hmm, I'd have to agree with ya, but that is because I drive a 3rd gen
I can spot one from a mile away even in stock trim, I almost look for them and start driving behind them or next to them without even thinking
nah, but there have been complaints of rattles and sqeaks on the 4th gens, 3rd gens were agreed to be more build more solid, numerous people who have owned both say that... the styling of the 3rd gen is the best out of all maxima's, at least in my opinion, with the 97-99 in a close second. About reliability, many 3rd gens experience premature auto tranny failure, exaust studs and other things. 4th gens have rattles.. I always see Camry's and Accords taking top ten in reliability and quality... Maxima's don't make many of the lists, except best V6 engines, which I couldn't agree on more. Ofcourse we as Maxima enthusiasts will argue in favor of the Maxima.

Nissan products scored well in reliability.
In the Family Car category the best models were:
1) Infiniti G20
2) Nissan Maxima
3) Toyota Camry
4) Honda Accord
5) Mazda 626
In the Upscale Car category the best models were:
1) Infiniti I30
2) Lexus ES300
3) Mazda Millenia
4) Acura TL
5) BMW 3-series
Most manuf's phased out coupes
Despite my personal preference for the look of a coupe (not my wife's pref, so I got hear a Max) coupes don't sell very well to the general public.
Family car buyers want 4 doors. Sports car buyers want 2 door and a car that's totally useless for 4. So, the only folks buying coupes are folks that need a family car but just don't want to drive a four door. That is, they'd rather drive a sports car, but they need the room for a few more folks on occasion. That makes for a very small coupe market.
Most manufacturers phased out coupes a few years ago, but they've slowly made a comeback. Nissan eliminated all coupes from all model lines a few years ago.
Maybe the should introduce a new car that's based on the Maxima but with 2 doors and call it the "Minima".
