knock on startup

i'm not sure if n e one has had the same problem but i have a strange knock rite at startup, for about 1-1.5 sec and then goes away and no problems i rn mobile 1 and mobile 1 oil filter change the oil atleast every 3000 if not more and just wondering wtf

i was also reading the hard starting problems some of you guys were having and i noticed if my car does'nt start right away if i turn the key off and let it set bout 5-10 sec it usually starts right up and no problem, sure its not the solution, being the tranny swap's and all just putting my 2 n

That noise is your timing chain tensioner, the chain rattles before it gets oil pressure and takes the slack out of the chain. Quite normal as cars get up there in mileage. 2 of my 3 maximas have done it.

I get this too, would this trigger an 0304 code? I don't think it does but thought I check

my odo is 235,000kms

If you are getting a startup rattle from the timing chain cover area, then its the tensioner. That rattle will not cause the KS code

My 95 Max has done this for years. It hasn't gotten any worse. Like you said, it makes the noise for a couple of seconds then it's done. I've learned to live with it.

No need to replace the chain, just the tensioner and to be thorough, the tensioner guide.
