TRANSMISSION (locking or non-locking)
I was told but forget, the information was somehow related to the information on door jam. Non-Locking is Open Diff . . . more than likely thats the tranny you would want. I honnestly dont know if any maxs cant with a locking diff.
For Major Power you would want a VLSD tranny above all, if not an Open Diff tranny to help somewhat balance power down, not as good as a VLSD would but better than a locking diff would.
But if anyone knew I'm sure they'll chime in soon

It's on the plate in the engine compartment, on the firewall on the passenger side. Open the hood, look back and to the left, and it's a shiny plate with rows of numbers.
One of the rows will say either
RE4F04A - open differential - One tire can easily spin by itself - bad
RE4F04V - VLSD differential - Both tires will pull together - good
These are the only two types of differentials factory-made for our cars. No lockers.
The number is also on the transmission, I believe. I think the manuals use the same "A" and "V" codes. Seems that the USA did not get the good stuff on a regular basis - most went to Canada on this continent, and Infiniti I30s have a lot of VLSD transmissions as well.
Lucky Canadians.
Jack your car up. Turn one wheel. If the other wheel doesn't turn or turns a little it's an open diff. If both wheels turn at the same time it's a VLSD. If the other wheel turns in the opposite direction of the one you are turning, it's a VLSD that doesn't work anymore (like mine), and fonctions like an open diff.
