Tail light goop and other light question
Tail light goop and other light question
Hello all,
I'm changing my tail light because one cracked. When I removed the cracked tail light, it wouldn't pull out easily because when the prior owner put in the modified clear/red tail light-- he apparently gooped a bunch of what looks like roofing tar or some crap on it.
Is that really needed? Is there supposed to be a gasket there or something? That crap got all over me, the tail light, the car, what a mess.
Anyway, I wanted to make sure it will be ok if I DON'T put all that goop back on or use a gasket. If I need one, I'd like to buy one vs. using that messy crud.
please see this link for a photo of what I mean, and also a photo of my new clear/red tail from custommaxima.com:

Also, I noticed in testing my lights, the clears on the inside of the tails, and the clears on the front sides... they don't seem to light up at all. Are they supposed to? Maybe the bulbs are just blown. They don't do anything when I have my lights on, turn signal, reverse, nothing... see photos at above link.
Thanks all!

That goopy crap is a sealant so the water wouldn't be able to get inside where the housing is. So the answer is YES you DO need it there. And you were supposed to get it with your new tail lights just separatly.
Ah, well-- got the lights from custommaxima.com, freakin $170 just to replace one tail because they only sell pairs. They didn't include the goop. Anything I can go get at an auto store? I would think... looks like it has a channel though for like a nice rubber gasket vs. the goop... as a matter of fact, it almost looks like there used to be a gasket on there maybe originally.
