Filler Bolt on Tranny.

Was about to flush my tranny, I was trying to get the fill bolt off (still soaking in WD-40 right now). Upon closer inspection I noticed a teflon thread sealant like rubbery feeling thing around the bolt. Is this a reusable piece or when ever the drain bolt is taken off a new one of those things would need to be put on?

wish I had a camera for pics.

they say you need all NEW 21 SCREWS!! i was like fawk that i used the same screws but used loc tight, you do need a new drain plug though..

oo wait the drain plug seal? you need a new drain plug if you take off the old one for sure

o btw if you are dropping the pan you definately need a new pan seal, and i think i paid like 23 dollars for a new seal and fliter screen at pepboys

I'm a 5 speed 2 da max, so it will be easy drain and refill and drive, I dont have to do none of that auto stuff.

On the 5 speed trannies there is a large about half dollar size filler bolt its a bronze-ish color and you just stick a half inch socket in their an unbolt. Mine is a biitch to take off and I noticed a light blue-ish glue look around aroud the threads at the base of the bolt.

I tried but its very tough, I'm going to wait till I get my impact wrench, better jack (using OEM) so I can get more height and clearance.

Was boared and figured I could drain and fill my trans so she'll feel smooth next week.

No need for any teflon tape or anything on the tranny bolts. Just stick it back in.

No need to worry about getting any additional stuff. Drain, refill till it drips out, good to go.

Great thanks for that info. I just see some type of teflon or something already on their and was curious. Oddly enough in reading thru the 350z FSM, they used some type of teflon on the filler bolt.

What gear oil should we be using in our manual trannies? Is it like other cars where you reach your finger in the hole and add some if you can't feel any oil in there ?

We should be running GL4 only fluids in our trannies. Redline and Amsoil are great products that work and protect well.

If you have an auto check the dipstick for fluid level.
For Manual trannies you could if you want to stick you finger in, tranny should be full to the drain bolt with gear oil.

I gather I should drain and replace rather than just make sure it's filled, especially since I have no idea if it's ever been changed in 72000 miles

Don't you mean full to the fill bolt? How much fluid do I need to have to fill it after draining?

He said he's using the oem jack to raise it up. He needs a floor jack or something else.

Oh yea 5 speed

Same thing, 4.5 quarts is needed.

Yea I meant I was using the OEM Jack that comes with the car so I didnt get the car that high off the ground, so I couldnt menouver a lot to try and get that bolt off, but I will leave it for the impact wrench to handle.

the fluid section has all this informations stickied for your convience. Redlines web site has the gl4 fluid you'll need for your tranny. amsoil maybe harder to find but not impossible.

I wouldn't recommend using an impact wrench on that bolt. If it happens to be really on there you don't want to risk breaking it and leaving part of it inside your tranny. If I were you I'd soak it with some pb blaster (at work we call it money **** ) then use a big breaker bar to get that sumbish loose. I didn't need a huge breaker bar for mine, only 18in

Thanks. I found a link to it and ordered a bunch of amsoil quarts and a pump that hooks up to the bottles with a hose on it

Yea I was thinking a impact wrench maybe overkill but I am using an 18in break bar. Before I do the impact wrench I'll get some PB blaster (WD-40 just seems too wattery) and soak it with that, and maybe start the car and let the tranny get some heat to help soak the pb and loosen the bolt.

The dealership was the last to touch the tranny, and I'm pretty sure the bolted tha sucker on tight.

When I changed out my tranny fluid. I drained it and then went for the fill bolt. I couldn't get this thing to budge as was freaking out. So I grabbed the can of PB Blaster, soaked it let it set for 5 minutes went back under there with the breaker bar and after a real good tug the thing came loose.

then some PB blaster I will need. Your story right there is why I wanted to make sure I got the fill bolt off first, I would not want to be in the situation where I couldnt fill back u p the tranny with fluid.

Ya sometimes I need to think ahead, but don't.

I'm just happy I got the bolt off.

If you have to stick a pipe on the end (cheater bar) of the 18in breaker bar for more leverage. Just don't use the impact whatever you do And yes pb blaster is your friend

I'll try some more leverage. my half inch break bar wouldnt seat in all the way so maybe that will help me get it off when the time comes.

IS it true that if you haven't changed your auto tranny fluid in a long time its better to just leave the old fluid in? Its weird but i heard it a few times.
