What do u guys think of this Max

1997 Nissan Maxima SE. 5 spd V6 107k mi. Black with beigh leather interior. great conditions. Very well maint. Just put new brakes clutch alt, starter. Has tinted windows. 10 cd changer moonroof. many options. asking 6900

thats the ad from this weeks want ad and it is basicly what im looking for however it is overpriced. the blue book is around 5900 i believe, however, new clutch, cant argue with that. I dont want to jump on the first max i find but this one might be alright. what do u think i should offer him and when i give this guy a call what should i ask him about it. I figure id ask the miles on when the first clutch blew and if he has ever replaced his ks

1. Ask for his maintenance records
2. Check where all the work was done and if not the dealer, try to assess the quality of parts that may have been used (especially for things like the clutch).
3. That price is definitely high.
4. Drive it. (Check for vibrations, pulling, shaking, etc.)
5. Show it to a mechanic - they can inspect the underbody, check for obvious leaks, etc.
6. Do a carfax.

Yep, Price is a little high. 1 year ago I paid $4000 for a beige on beige 97 SE 5-speed with every option and 87K miles. Interior was perfect, as it had cloth covers on its whole life. The exterior was good except it had a couple of marks on the back bumper.

I would check to see how many miles are on that clutch. A new clutch to someone could be 8K miles and that is plenty of time to burn the sh*t out of it. I would say keep looking unless they want to drop to at least $6000. I looked for 7-8 months to find my 5-speed. Good luck.

When you bought ur max with this many miles was it the original clutch, i would think it was and how was driving a car with a warn, slipping clutch. was it very noticable, lot of power loss? should i be so worried about the clutch?

too high for a 5 speed. keep in mind the average citizen will not buy a 5 speed. So tell him to come down or shove it.

I remember seeing a similar car for sale around my way, 98 black se 100k the guy was asking $7k. Long story short the car never sold. I think that price is too high.

Yes it was the original clutch. I didn't know how long it was going to last and figured it would need to be replaced soon, so I beat the hell out of it and got it replaced at I think 97K. There wasn't a power loss until the very end when it started to slip. The cheapest I could find to get it done was $700 and that was before I knew how to work on the car so I had it done. I wouldn't be worried about it, like I said just find out how many miles are on the "new" clutch. My car now has 112K on it and I have had it almost 1 year.

that is a tad high, $6k seems about right IMO. I paid $4.5K for my 95 GXE 5 speed with 88k, clean in and out. And yeah, about $3k in maint later it runs like brand new (It ran really well when I first got it, but I'm a tad **** about PM)
