$1700 for paint job and dent repairs?

first off, please dont hate me, I drive a Honda but ive been browsing this site lately and i really like it.

Last Saturday I got in an accident, I scraped the side of my car up. The passanger fender needs to be replaced. the door has some waveyness in it i need to fix, and the quarter panel has a little waveyness and a bunch of old door dings.

Ive been going to a bunch of places getting estimates, they seam to range from 900-2200 just to replace the fender, fix the door skin and fix the quarter panel and paint them all and blend into just the hood.

I figured if im gonna paint half the car, i might as well paint the whole thing. the quotes on fixing the damage and painting the car seam like around 3-4 grand or so. well this one place says they can paint the whole car the same color it is now (black with metallic gold) and fix the damage for only 1700 (would be 1300 for just the things i mentioned above)... this seams way too cheap. i asked all the questions i knew to ask, but maybe you guys can help me with what else to ask.

does this seam too good to be true ? what kind of questions can i ask to make sure im going to get a good job done ? he keeps assuring me that it will look like new and that they provide a warranty for as long as i own the car. also for 500$ more they will paint it a new color if i want.

Ask that shop for 1700 if there going to take all the moldings, lights and trim off the car or just tape it up? Usually a 1700 whole car fix me up paint job doesn't get you very high on the quality level. More so for the fact that you have damage to repair included in that low price. Think about it.

paint

whether they take the trims off or not wont make a difference. The only thing they should take off is the spoiler(if you have one) and the little flaps that are on the back of each wheel(sometimes rust accumulates there without you noticing. My car is being painted now as we speak. My uncle owns a shop and he painted my whole cAr for 80$.(i basically just bought the paint.) i had alot of dents and scratches. I will post pics shortly.. the car should be ready by today or tomorrow so i will post the end results up. Unfortunately im in NJ so i cant help you but he will remove all dents/scratches and repaint a whole maxima for about 1000-1200 depending on how bad it is.. ALso, in about 4 days i will take it back so that he can polish the new paintjob/buff/and wet sand it.. that should be NICE!!!

I would ask for referrals. Also, how long has the shop been in business? Check the local Better Business Bureau/Chamber of Commerce for complaints.

You have not stated if this is covered by your insurance but it might be worthwhile to ask the insurance company for their referrals as they usually have to stand behind the workmanship.

Go for the $1,700 job. Turn around and sell the Honduh privately and buy a real car, say a 97 or 98 Maxima SE, 5-speed, with low mileage.

I just had my car fixed, to replace and repaint the front fender, blend the drivers door, hood and refinish the front bumper was $1,500.

I did ask and they are going to take off all the moldings, im actually gonna get new molding for most of the spots that can be replaced and he said hell put on the new molding for free. i also made sure he is going to take off the taillights headlights etc and doors and trunk and hood if i change the color for the 500. he also said hell be color sanding it and i think he mentioned polishing etc also.

its not maaco, i wouldnt go through them heh.

one thing i didnt ask is the spoiler, should i have him take that off also ? i dont know if my car came with the spoiler or not , i just bought the car a couple months ago. you can see pics of it at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2135644 maybe you guys can tell if it came with it or not. im not an expert on cars... yet at least hehe.

im not sure what the flaps are your talking about. there is nothing between my tires and my metal, my friend mentioned that the guy mustve took some stuff out from there because my tires are like a inch from my metal.

correct me please if im wrong.

what he should remove if i keep same color:
1)moldings
2)pull bumper cover off
3)tail lights and probably headlights
4)rear window, and back side windows
5) civic and honda emblems (which ill replace)

if i change the color
1)molding
2)bumpers completely
3)tail lights and headlights
4)rear window, and back side windows
5)civic and honda emblems (which ill replace)
6)hood
7)fenders
8)trunk lid
9)doors (2door)

and color sand either way right?

P.S. ill probably change the color because im tired of washing my car every 5 days lol. black sucks.

From reading about your uncles work ethics and pricing, it's obvious he does whats considered to be chop shop work. The opening statement you have about moldings tells me you know nothing about quality collision repair or the proper way to prep and paint a car.

Taped up moldings such as the window belt moldings, door handles and taped off light assemblies leaves hard edges in the paint job. Those edges are the first place the paint fails and peals back from. You can't get smooth edges by taping off the car, it just doesn't work that way.
Thats classic Maaco work, otherwise know as chop shop work, you can spot it easily.
I'd stop advertising or telling people the way your uncle does work, your not doing him any good with what your saying.

From looking at the pictures of your car, I can give you a huge list of items that need to come off the vehicle before it's sprayed. I'd be glad to supply you and your uncle with that list, if you'd like?
