Im new at it too and im not even good at starts on flat surfaces. When im on a hill i release the clutch 1/2 way (while still on brake) then quickly gas it and release the clutch. I know this isnt good for the clutch but im still learning. I also heard you can put up your handbrake and start up like you normally do, and relase the handbrake when you feel it catch.

You have to learn where the friction point of the clutch is. Once you've mastered that technique there is no need to even apply the handbrake.

The other alternative is don't drive up hills!

Yea true I am thinking about lowering my clutch pedeal closer to the floor because it seems I have to let the clutch pedal halfway out before it even grabs where does yours grab at?

Park facing uphill. Then work the gas and clutch until you can keep the car still with out any brakes applied. Then you will be a 5 speed master.

When I first got my I30t I had a real hard time with the gear changing and taking off...I have driven MANY manual cars, I work at a dealership and I work w the used cars...but for some reason it took about 4 months to really get used to driving my I30. I recently changed the clutch and it got better because it was no longer shaking the **** out of the car on take - offs due to old clutch I guees.

i use the ebrake sometimes on hills to prevent rolling. is it okay on the clutch for you to hold the car on a hill using the clutch and not the brakes? i thought it wasn't which is why i ebrake.

As I said before, find the friction point of the clutch. It does not burn up the clutch if you hold it there as the clutch is not fully engaged. Plus how often are you going to do this?

Practise is the best thing. Another technique if your footwork isnt that fast, is hold the ebrake, and then gas let off clutch and when you feel the resistance slowly let off the ebrake and drive forward.

Another way (not good) rev to 1.5K and come off clutch slowly, you'll burn it up, but better than rolling back too far, the car behind you runs into you.

quick, percist feet come with practise.

le the clutch out until u see the RPM's drop a lil then slowly take ur foot off the brake until ur only foot left on the pedals is ur clutch. U shouldnt be moviing, then when the light turns green hit the gas(to about 2 grand) and slowly let off of the clutch it will work EVERY TIME

What? LOL

Hahahaha..

Waaaaayyyyy too technical.

You simply practice letting the clutch out and giving it a little more gas until you feel it take hold.

So, you typically have right foot on brake, start letting out the clutch, when it starts to engage, move you right foot over to the gas and start giving it more gas.

Then again, I've been clutching for 30 years or so. I don't need to use the brakes to hold my car on a hill but I do anyway because I don't want to slip/burn the clutch very long.

As most have said, just practice. Practice on a slight incline hill, not a major hill. As you get more proficient, move to a bigger hill.

Mine grabs at the top 1/4" (new clutch time!) and I have a steep hill with a stop sign at the end of my street that I have to stop at ~ 3 times a day at least... You just need practice, once you figure out the exact point where your clutch catches you begin to automatically let out the clutch that much, it's all in your head.

Use your emergency brake. Then when you know you're ready to move, add some gas, engage the clutch until you feel the car want to move, (the rear end will squat a little bit and is normal) release the emergency brake, and you're on your way...Of course you'll need a little more gas than you would normally use since you're on a hill.
As many others have said, you should practice this, but it's the best way to save your clutch, AND prevent you from rolling back.

You can adjust the grab point to be closer to the floor, if needed.

just go by the feel of it man, turn the radio and ac off and listen for the rpms to drop as you let the clutch in smoothly, feel the vibes in the pedals, steering wheel, and shifter as the engnie starts to stumble a bit, its asking for a bit more gas there, react by giving it a bit.
just sorta go with the flow until your used to it, there is no trick thatll make it easier really

when on a hill, let out the clutch to the friction point, then take your right foot off the brake and gas it and let out the clutch.

behind the clutch pedal you'll see a shaft that goes into the firewall, that will need to be rotated clock wise (lower grab point) or coutner clock wise (raise grab point). Follow the shaft back towards you, you'll see a large nut that will need to be losened in order for your to rotate the shaft. Dont forget to tighten the nut back when your done.

If my description sucks there I believe the one in the how to's or faqs maybe better.
