short throw shifter

PS 89 SE for sale doesnt run due to screwed up fuel injection system. symptom is getting way too much fuel to engine, dealership doesnt know exactly what the prob is but pretty sure entire system needs to be replaced. pics available via email

Pacesetter STS is the cheapest one at about $75 +shipping new. Maybe if you shop around you can get a better deal.

Dont buy the Pacesetter, its a chunk of ****. I installed one with my 5-speed swap, and less than a year later I replaced it with a 5-gen B&M. You have to mod the thing it bolts to, but it is very straight forward. The B&M is about 90% better than the pacesetter. Still a bit notchy, but doesn't expand and make it almost impossible to shift when hot. I hated the Pacesetter.

all 3rd gen shifters are the same.

You have to modify a newer one, but it can be done. Check the link in Harvs post a few up.

I have never had ANY problems with my pacesetter, and i regularly take it on 2 hr trips, and after getting off the highway, it still shifts fine, Granted I didn't super tourque the nuts holding it together, but It does work well, at least in my car.

Mine were not tight. When cold, the thing was loose (think hot dog down a hallway). When hot... well, tight is tight.

Short throw shifters have a higher fulcrum point[longer on the bottom],so it takes less movment of the stick to get it in the next gear...

Cutting the shifter down looks better IMO,but doesn't change the fulcrum point of the shifter...

Excuse the crude drawing...

So excuse me for sounding ignorant but I have just recently bought a 92 VE and this is high priority on my list for mods right off the bat. So does the 4th or 5th B&M STS work better and which is the easier to mod for fitment?

Thx

B&M works better, but install is custom. Pacesetter is crappy but easiest to install.

Ok that's cool but the question still stands as I understand about the Pacesetter issues........Some people in this thread seemed to have modded the 5th gen to work as well as the 4th. Is this true and if so which of the B&M 4th or 5th gen would be easiest?

If you cut the stock shifter, it will still shorten the throw a bit. Also how bad is the Pacesetter from experience? I may be getting one used for a real good price. How bad is the notchiness, is it really hard to go through the gears? Some feel like an on/off switch, going through the gears. Like there's no inbetween, just clicks hard into the next gear.

Thanks.

If your really picky about smooth shifting then i would say don't buy it..They are notchy, but it's not that bad...I don't have any problem with it myself...
