3.5 cam spacers, cams, and sprockets

I'm doing my 3.5 swap right now. I had tilley drill the cams and it looks like he forgot to include the dowel pins. I'm not really understanding the need for cams to be drilled. Is it so you can shove a long dowel pin in there? If this is the case, then you need to drill a hole in the cam spacer as well. Where can you get a dowel pin?

You can get dowels at industrial nut and bolt stores. Or you could pull the ones out of your VQ30 cams and use them.

The reason for dowels is so that there is absolutely no way the timing gears can slip relative to the cams. Not only would that create a rough running engine, but with an interference type engine serious damage could result if the gears slipped far enough.

And yes, the spacers have to be drilled, too.

I don't recommend the swap for anyone unless they are sadistic. I'm starting to wish I just would have turbo'd my 3.0L.

I am starting to agree with you. Just waiting for my cams to come back from Tilley but my hands are starting to look like ground meat with grease mixed in.

If I ever get my hands on that JClaw for suggesting this to me he will be sorry.

Does that mean I'll have to hide from you at CSCS next year?

Putting the engine back together is like putting a 3.0 back together.

So its really that hard? Im confused, the sticky makes it sound like pretty decent amount of work, but not THAT much, but then you and jime are saying that you wish you never started doing this! Since im car-less right now and dont need a car for another 6 months or so, im thinking of getting a CHEAP 4th gen w/ over 200k miles, and leaving about 2.5K on the swap and getting the car to good running order overall(doing it myself). Problem is that i have almost 0 tools and little car mechanical background, but i am mechanically inclined and i belive i can do this. Would you guys recomend it for me?

btw, sry for getting in ur thread with my question

But what's cooler, running 13's supercharged, or running 13's all motor?

I don't think I will be sorry but it is a lot of work. Of course I am doing a lot of other stuff at the same time and it will probably take me all winter to complete the project but I am really excited about doing it and it keeps me out of trouble. I do think the worst part of the work is over now and by next summer I probably won't hurt JClaw too much when I see him again.
