POLL: What are your RPM's at a certain set speed...
Hello all. I think I might have something wrong with my auto trans on my 1996 Maxima. Just got it replaced a while ago, and it seemed like it was shifting later, and overall was running at a higher RPM than normal. At first, I thought this was cool, but now, gas prices are soaring, and I get 15mpg.
Just got my knock sensor replaced yesterday, and I drove for 50 miles, and then took to advance auto, and sure enough, the code was gone. --So maybe that'll help with the poor MPG, but I was wonder what ya'lls RPM's a certain speeds were, so that I can compare to mine..
I would really appreciate the help...
Here are my stats... I have an automatic, and I left Over-Drive 'ON' for these test. I set cruise control at these speeds, and the the RPMs become steady before I took the measurements...

Nope, those RPMs per speed look right if you're in 4th gear (auto). I'm assuming you don't have any other codes? How's the maintenance on this car? Specifically, fuel filter, air filter, TB, PCV.
Yea... I'm serious...lol
No other codes... I should have made this measurement of RPMs per speed before I got the knock sensor replaced, but I didnt. But still, it seems to hesitate in the shifting, even when I'm not accelerating hard, the RPM's will go up to 4000+ before it feels like shifting...
Just changed plugs, fuel filter, and PCV valve 3 weeks ago. Haven't tried the TB clean "trick" yet... I will tomorrow...

RPMs look ok (I have an automatic).
Sounds like you might need to do some basic maintenance (O2 sensors perhaps?, filters, etc.).
Also, you say that the RPMs go up to 4k before you feel the shift.... are you feeling the car accelerate with the climbing RPMS, or is the tranny slipping? (perhaps you have a lead foot
)
PS: knock sensor will not affect cruising RPMs

Haha, well, yes, it does continue to accelerate... Maybe it is just my lead foot...
I was thinking about getting a new y-pipe (BTW, does this really boost HP much?).. --when I do that, I'll get new O2 sensors while I'm at it...
I believe I've done all the maintenance... Spark plugs, PCV valve, fuel filter.
(*Will change the air filter and clean the TB this weekend...) --Am I missing anything?

Bad advice as he can bump an old thread. The thing is that he is responding to someone from 5 years which is not the way to do it.
