Couple problems new to the Maxima

I have just purchased 1996 Black on Black Maxima and I have few problems I could not figure out.

First is the third brake light is not working (the trunk spoiler light leds are not working). I checked is there a fuse for that thing or anything else to look at.

Second is I would like to replace the fog light bulbs with the yellow "LEXUS IS 300" color style bulbs and does anyone now a good brand for that.

The car is 1996 MAXIMA Black on Black leather, heated seats, BOSE CD/Cassette moonrof etc it has 119k and I paid $900 dollars for it cash I got a deal of lifetime on it. Runs fast but it is automatic.

Thank you in advance

its probably the light assembly itself that has gone out.
if you look on the homepage of maxima.org there is a way to fix it, it didnt work for me so im gonna buy one from this website http://www.spoilerlights.com/

Do your other brake lights work? If so, the only thing it could really be is a faulty connection (severed wire, disconnected harness) or the light in the spoiler itself failed. Like chillin014 said, you may have to buy a replacement light bar.

Here you go - http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....llow+fog+lexus

Ugh, I would've killed for that deal. Black on black, fully loaded SE? That's crazy for $900. Even with 119k, the VQ will long outlast that, well over twice the current mileage.

I agree w/ PMOHR. Check in the trunk for the lead that goes along one of the trunk hinges. I had the same problem with my fiance's Camry. She closed the trunk when it was too full and the wire to the third light got pulled loose. I believe it is simply clipped to the rear brake light harness along the lower rear deck of the trunk. Sometimes, you can simply reconnect the clip and you are good to go, but you might have a crack, broken wire where the trunk hinge constantly bends the wire harness. You can use a tester while you have someone press on the brakes to activate the brake light switch and see if you are getting any electric at various spots along the wire and closer to the actual LED light. One wire is the ground and the other is the hot wire. Don't worry, you won't get shocked using the tester. I haven't heard of the LED third brake going out too often unless it was shorted out by moisture or a severed wire or the car was in a rear end accident that actually broke the internals of the LED.

If the light bar is out (electric in the wire, but still no LED), I think several members have given you some places to purchase a replacement, but you should be able to find one at a salvage yard as well or someone parting out their car. To replace the bar, you will have to remove the entire spoiler to keep from damaging the paint because the screws for the light are upsidedown in the spoiler. You will have to remove the upper trunk cover and then there are screws on the center and ends of the spoiler. Then remove the screws to the light bar and carefully pull the lead wire through the end of the spoiler. To reinstall the wiring, you can connect the end of the light bar wire to a stiff piece of coated wire (not bare) and fish it through the hole. Then, run your wire to the harness and either solder it or clip it with the existing clip.
Also, make sure you apply some silicone or black windshield caulk around the spoiler mounting holes going into the trunk lid. I'm sure the rubber grommets in your '96 have started to deteriorate and not doing so will cause leaks into the trunk and more problems.

Hope this helps. Good luck!!

ive got a 96 gle, and the most noticable aesthetic differences between this and other models is the wood trim around the center console and door panels. also, i beleive the gle was the only model for this year that came with an 8-way power driver seat. Other than that its got a softer suspension than the other two models. So basically if you don't have any of the things listed, it narrows it down to the other 2.

Nice find. Good luck with car. Definitely a nice treat. Trying to find a second max now that I can do some things to.

But as far as the spoiler light, just check the bulb by pulling the back cover. The bulb probably blew.

nice find for $900. my spoiler light wasn't working due to moisture getting in somehow and deteriorating one of the resistors. i broke the light open and soldered a piece of thin copper wire across where the resistor was for a quick fix to get through inspection. glued it back together with super glue. i dont think there is any fuse.

The GLE has a softer suspension. It's the Grand Luxury Edition (just highlighting so you see) It has to have the most luxurious ride/ interior or otherwise it wouldn't be the grand luxury edition.
