AC Compressor Questions/Help

I'm almost 100% positive that my AC Compressor has gone bad. It started out as a noise that sounded like one of the belts or pully's would make if going bad and changed in tone when the AC was on or off. I figured it may just be putting more load on the belts ect...

Well I left it alone for a week as I didn't have time to investigate and now I have no AC (still blows, but no cold air) and the noise that it's making is pretty dang loud. The noise itself is comming from the left side of the motor where the belts/pully's are.

Has anyone had this happen and what did you do to fix. I called the dealer and he said the AC Compressor and Filter I believe was going to cost about $900!

Type of noise?

Is your belt on...correctly?

And, in the world of most cars/part manufactures, you mean the right side

The belts and pully's are fine. I checked them out and the dealer did today was well.

Was browsing online and I can find a new A/C Compressor for $189 and the Filter Dryer for $40. Then you figure labor and the frion recharge has to be about $300 cheaper then the $900 the dealer wants.

Sounds like the same problem that I have. My bearing is going out on my clutch assembly on the compressor. You have 2 options. Replace the AC/Compressor or you can run a smaller belt and take the AC out all together. Can't remember the belt size you need though.

unfortunatly an AC compressor costs $50-$200 depending on teh size. a filter costs... about $3. that 900 number is a BIT excessive.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still trying to consider all my options. Smaller belt to eliminate the A/C compressor may work, but I plan to sell the car in about 6 months or so and not sure if that will do me good or not.
