I bit off more that I can chew!

I'm a newbie to this forum so I would like to apologize for any stupid questions asked. Here is the situation. The car is a 96 se 5 speed with a PFI turbo kit. Recently The RVM under drive pulley decided that it wanted to back out 2 screws from the timing ring on the back of the pulley. Subsequently the two bolts that backed out went threw the timing chain cover, drained the oil and I lost compression in 5 and 6. Naturally a motor swap is in order. I've posted this dilemma in the boosted forum and Matty suggested a DE-K motor. I bought a DE-k and got the sucker home, just pulled the DE from the car and I am now confused on the wiring of the EGR system. I have looked at the FSM for the 98 max in the stickies and it is way more complicated than the 2001 model. I have read the posts on how to install the 00IV IM on the 4th gen but there is not much info on the whole motor swap. I could just throw on the 4th gen IM but it would be a shame to let the fantastical goodness of the 00IV to go to waste. I would just do away with the whole EGR system but emissions in good ol Chattanooga just started and they are not letting anything slide on modified cars. A-holes!!!!!

Further more there is no EVAP equipment on the DE-K but I'm sure I can make the de system work. I have the Deachwerks 570 side flow injectors and will start the modification of the lower IM as soon as I finish this post.

I think I've read every post on this situation but some of those thinks can get buried. I need all the help I can get, and only have two weeks to finish.

Thanks,
Choray

My suggestion would be get a 95 ECU and remove both the EGR and EVAP systems. The 95 ECU doesn't give two flying fxcks if those things are MIA.

The 95 ecu doesn't throw a code if the EGR and EVAP systems are disconected? The emissions in chattanooga plug throught the OBDII port, how would it not throw a code?

Its a beast. Still got some drivability problems. I got some vids that I'll link up tomorrow.

The 95 isn't sensative to the emissions equipment being gone. I removed my EGR system and threw no codes. For the EVAP, there is none on the 95's so it really is no worry.

You will be better off selling those injectors and getting topfeed injectors; rather than modifing the IM

Cash and time are two things I don't have at the time. I have to get it running ASAP. Right now I'm undressing both blocks and will rig what I can for the time being. I'll look into getting a 95 ECU that way I can do away with the EVAP and then I'll come up with a way to get around the EGR. I read in few posts that a resistor could be wired in line with the ECU to trick it but I Have not seen confirmation as to whether it works.

I said earlier that I completely removed my EGR. I did none of that resistor BS and it still ran like a beast with decent fuel econ.

Oh yeah, vids are now in my sig.

You can swap the complete EGR system from your 96 (if it has it) on to the 00 engine. Remember 00-01 Cali spec didnt have EGR system on the rear for some reason. I am not sure WHERE it is located but all I did was unbolt the rear headers, complete egr system and bolt everything to the 00 engine using the 5th gen egr guide tube. let me know if you have any more questions.

Is there a specific production date 95 ECU that you need so that doesn't care about EGR and EVAP?

Car-part.com shows

thru 5/94, SE, MT, Fed
from 6/94 to 8/94, SE, MT, Fed
from 9/94 to 11/94, SE, MT, Fed
from 12/94, SE, MT, Fed

I would say the earliest possible. Mine was 3/94. If you you wanna risk it and can't find a pre 5/94 then go for it.

Broaner, you work for a salvage yard right? What are the odds of finding one of those ECUs? Will the Auto ECU work on the manual trany car. Just got her running and it thows a 450, EVAP pressure sensor ,and a 1445, which is not in the FSM.

I have used an auto ECU in two of my 5spd maximas, including the turbo one, and I30tMikeD uses an auto ecu (MY auto ECU btw, I should start charging him rent) in his 5spd turbo I30.

Same. I'm using my auto ECU in my 240.

Choray, I don't work at a salvage yard. That would be Allen.

I need to look into this then, because Ive been contemplating doing the swap for some time now. Just need to know exactly what needs to be done, time to search, FAQ, and read

The early 95's had a different EGR setup, it was similar to the turd gens. I dont think it had many electrical parts. So you should be able to get away running no egr(although I would just swap the 5th gen guide tube). And evap is not that hard to begin with. Can you take a pic of the top of your manifold? I never seen an early 95, I want to see if it is similar to mine.

i have a 95 ecu on my 96 with my 3.5 before when i used 96 ecu i had egr ,evap and map probs since 95 was installed over 2000 miles ago not one cel.

because one 95 doesnt even have map two i bet theres no egr feedback to ecu in 95 and three the 95 has a totally diff evap its canister is under the hood not in the rear of the car like 96-99 and it seems to be totally vacumm controlled . Un like my 96 which was commputer controlled solenoids

Wait, so am i understanding correctly that you are running a 3.5 off a 95 ecu? How returnless fuel set up for a 3.5 working in a car set up for a return system?

Kris, early 95 had map/baro's but it doesn't seem they were referenced. I unplugged mine and got zero codes so I pulled it out.

Sure the car will run without EGR, but, when the emissions @$$ violates our muffler with that damn stick, we will fail NOx. Any suggestions???

"Although I would just swap the 5th gen guide tube"

Just the guide tube and it will bolt/fit right up to our current EGR system???

I can take a cell phone shot of my manifold. I am not sure what the production date is on the car. I am guessing I can find that info on the door panel.

On the 95 and up they don't stick the tube in the pipe, its only a plug in the OBDII port. That and they lok to see if you have a cat.

No testing in FL

that maybe so is in TN but in Cali the violation still continues...
so if I use the 95 ECU in my 96 I wont pass emissions?????

Kevlo, can you show me some pic or some extended instructions on the guide tube swap?

Good news. I was able to get all codes fixed using parts I had just laying around. I'm still gonna get the 95 ecu from Aznsap so I can put on the 00IV manifold. She is running like a scalded dawg.

I now hate my car! I've been driving for 3 days with out a problem, so I think I'm in the crear. Jack up the car, put the cat back on, crank her up and good old 443 shows back up, along with a 1335 misfire code. Clear them out and everything is cool. Drive to the DMV and the car fails the damn readyness test! Does any one know what the readyness test period is for these cars?

It lives! Put in the 95 ECU and everything is gravy. I'm tripping 2 auto tranny codes but my 5 spd doesn't seem to mind. Now she just needs to hold togeather for a week to get the emissions tested.

I have found the dumbest imbread sum beech in the world! I happen to go to the emissions testing center at lunch today, to my suprise so did everyone else that lives in the thriving metropolis of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Being the genius that I am I get in the line that has the most OBDII cars, thinking it would be faster. In theory it would have been, however there was only one person working the line of 20 cars, whereas the other two lines had two fine state employees servicing motorests full of joy. Just when I get to the point to where there is no way I can back out, the F'CKER leaves to take a crap!!!!!!! 10 minutes later he comes walking out with a big grin and proceeds to Go back to work. After 40 minutes in line I finally pull my car in an this A HOLE wants to chitchat like I have nothing better to do. He sees the two screens in my dash and want to know how I put them in...........who the F'CK cares, im hungry, coughing and wearin a tie, I want to be on my way. This tool plugs in to the OBDII port and breaks the fuse panel cover. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE THE TAKE THE DAM THING OFF!!!!!!!! He finally finds the right hole, like hes never seen it before, andreads the codes. I'm almost home free. When I put in the 95 ECU all egr and EVAP code wnt a way. However because it now reads 2 automatic transmission codes, I STILL FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a MANUAL! I failed emissions because of a transmission that I don't even have.
Breath in,,,,,,,Breath out

I was prepaied for this, and had copies of the factory service manual that explained those two codes. I politely explaine dthat I had a computer that went bad, and had to replace it with the only ECU that I had access to, and it just so happened to be out of and auto, but no engine codes.
This tool said, "Don't know nutin bout cars, I play pool." Thanks for the heads up, now I know were to go to beat your a$$. He gives me the number to the county emissions mechanic that I can pleed my case to. Called the guy, but it might be 3 weeks before I get a response.
Then as I'm driving out of the bay, he tells me to have a nice day.........If I would have had my pistol in the car, I'd have taken his knee caps out.

What has been your experience?

Huggs and Kisses
