I took my car to be checked out around a month ago and told the mechanic to inspect the belts. I got the car back and the mechanic said to me that all of the belts are fine. Since then my car STILL squeals when it starts up. Anyone know which belt in particular would cause the squeal?

I did not click on your link Karim, because I do not have audio on my computer. But one easy way to find out is by spraying some liquid silicone on one belt at a time. When you spray the belt that is squeeling it should shut it up for a while. Then you will know which one is making the noise. Also check the tension your belts. Grab the belt and turn it, it should turn 90 degrees...if it turns more than that then you may need to crank on one of the belt tensioners.

Belt tensioner? How does it start when it's already warm?

Most common belt to squeal is the a/c-alternator belt. If it can't be tightened anymore, replace it.

When its warm, it doesn't squeal at all. the longer i have the car off, the more apparent the squeal becomes.

I just looked at the video. That is definitely your alternator belt. Did you just replace it recently? If not, replace it. If it's still in good shape, just tighten the tensioner.

don't spray anything on your belts, unless you want them to fall off

happened to me once, but not w/ the Max

The alternator belt hasn't been touched at all.

I have the same problem, exactly. I had my belts all replaced about 2 months ago. They warned me I might hear a squeal on cold start at some point. He pointed out that the belts aren't bad, but just need to be tightened. Apparenty whenyou put in a new belt it stretchs out and needs to be tightened again. May take 2 tightening to get it to the right spot where it will last long. Before, my belts squealed horribly, but would eventually go away after the car had time to warm up when I looked at them, they were stretched and glazed.

Luckily its fairly easy to tighten the belts yourself, but I dont know which is doin it, so this thread helps me a bit

The vid strikes close to home.

I replaced my belts a few months ago because of the squeal and it was comin' up to 60K tune-up time anyway.

When we got in there to swap them out my tensioner was SO loose. I only had the squeal on the 1st start of the morning or after it sat for quite awhile.

That is a MONSTER of a squeal you got, try messing with your tensioner before swapping anything.

Hope you get it solved, I hate small probs. like that....

I had the same thing. I changed the alternator belt with help of the haynes and it hasn't happened since. Be careful though, you gotta loosen the tensioner then tighten the other bolt.

Mine was exactly the same a couple nights ago. I floored it down the street just to make it go away... Is the tightening procedure in Haynes or Chilton?

O BTW konax grats on almost 1000!

dude i had the same problem when i bought my max
it ended up being the combo of the tensioner and the belt
well first off the little thing that u crank down dosent mean **** i got rid of mine
all u need is an old fasioned crowbar and some pressure to tigether the 12mm bold on the side of the tensioner
anyway it is one belt that u will have to change it takes like 10 minutes
all u have to do is get under the hood, it is all located on the passanger side of the motor by the horn(looks like a diaphram
u will see a tensioner and a wheel under it about 90mm in diameter loosten the 12mm on the side of the wheel and than start loostening the tensioner (it threads backwards) losten it up till u can remove the belt and get the new one now fish the new one back on the same way that the old one on there (on the a/c underdrivepulleyand up to the top a fiew more things i think that there are a total of 5 pulley's that u will have to include (I THINK)
anyway have fun and to everyone else if this is happening to ur car get it changed soon if the belt pops than BAM mo more car running it does go arround the alternator and without that that means no power for the car !!!!

Yeah, come to think of it, it really only happens with cold perspiration in the mornings or if it's wet out/puddle hopping
