Temp Sending Unit? I think....

What is the name of the part or parts that can lead to a temp gauge showing incorrect temps....i would start the car, cold, and the needle would shoot all the way up...i overheated once, but fixed that problem. but my gauge was never normal since then. i want to get it replaced, but im a do it ureselfer...sooo...

is it called the "temperature switch", "sending unit"? how do i tell nissan what part it is...i called and tried to explain and they just kept saying, bring the car in...

i changed my thermostat, and im not oveheating, its just showing i am though...needle sometimes starts going up and down fast also..... help!!! thanks guys

Actually ECTS does not control the gauge. It is only used by the ECU. The sensor that is used to control the gauge is called the Temperature Gauge Sending unit (or something like that).
