Plain, Slotted, or Drilled rotors?

My front brake rotors are both scraped and warped. I currently have the stock rotors and Raybestos Quietstop ceramic pads (about 10k miles on them). There's a lip on the edge of the rotors, and I can feel slight vibration when I brake.

I've searched the stickies and other online sources to try to figure out of it's worth it to get slotted or drilled rotors, and if so which one, but I'm getting mixed results. What are you experiences with them? I tend to drive my Max pretty hard sometimes, both accelerating and braking, but don't race. Do the slotted/drilled rotors noticeably improve braking? Do they wear quicker?

I'm considering the Brembo's, where they are about $45 each plain or $80 slotted and/or drilled. Should I consider replacing the rears as well?

well you might as well replace all 4, but i just replace my front ones for now

i got the cross drilled slotted, but their all for looks. i heard that since there is less surface area, the braking is weaker

the best rotors for performance wise is brembo blanks, then again if i would do it again, i would just get brembo slotted, because of dust and debris that could scratch and damage the blanks

So do the pads make more of a difference than rotors? Are Brembo's the way to go for blanks? Do pads need to be replaced at the same time as rotors? I didn't replace my rotors when I replaced my pads because I didn't think I needed them, but the vibration is more noticeable now.

usually you would have the rotors resurfaced when you add new pads, then bed in the pads and its off to the races...

Well if you get slotted and cross drilled that will increase your rep points.

if u get slotted and xdrilled u cant resurface them.

if you are autocrossing is the only reason to get x-drilled or slotted... i got them for looks and the possibility that i might get into autocrossing down the line... yeah right...by the time i do that i will need new rottors anyway (not to mention a complete suspension overhaul)
lol

yeah..i just replaced my pads and rotors and autozone's rotors and pads work just fine for me...slotted and drilled seems a little like overkill

Don't bother with slotted or drilled rotors. Get blanks. Slotted or cross drilled rotors cause more brake pad wear, more brake dust, are more expensive, and don't last as long because you cannot resurface them.

Pads make pretty much all the difference between the two parts. I don't think there's a performance advantage in x-drilled/slotted, especially in straightforward dry braking.

get blanks. don't believe anyone that says slotted/drilled are best for daily driving.

Slotted or drill are better for performance because they allow pad gasses to escape under severe braking conditions which resists brake fade.

Solid stock replacement rotors give the best overall braking performance under normal use.

Same theory goes for pads. High performance brake pads have poor initial bite. They need to heat up before they grab and work best under hard use conditions. A stock replacement ceramic pad will have good initial bite which will feel better to a daily driver.

This is a great web site with information about braking systems and how they work. It may help you with your choice of braking components. http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/te...e_papers.shtml

Cross drilled and slotted CAN be resurfaced if the shop has the correct machine!! My mechanic does them all the time. I have cross drilled and slotted 13" cobra rotors with carbon metallic pads and I get minimal dusting, zero fade but it's hard to comapre as I went this route when going to the 300ZX TT BBK:

Thanks for all the input! I think I'll get blanks, as I just do "everyday" type driving. Are Brembo's or other aftermarket blanks better than OEM rotors?

IMO no. I installed OEM's a few months ago and they've been working very well. Much cheaper than Brembo blanks.

i have drilled form i rotors, the have been good for about 8k now, normal ones would last me 1 month......

i think my pads wear out quicker tho...

no complaints here.

i had to get new rotors, and i did my research.

blanks are the way to go unless you add alot of power to your car. your really not going to need anything more for daily driving. i even autocross my car with blanks, and it sofar works just fine, i have about 200whp (i like to be modest so i will say 192whp or there about).

i would say add some boost of any type your looking for something better.

if you upgrade to differnt calipers, big brake kits etc... then your looking at better rotors to keep up. by default the max doesnt need any of that stuff.

pads make a differnce too. i get the metal master brake pads, sofar i get ALOT of dust, i mean ALOT. but the performance gain from them on plain rotors are really great so i dont care about it. i run the car harder than most people because i love autocross so much i kinda do it on the daily road :P to work etc... so it may cause alot of dust because of my driving style.

i would have liked to get the bremo plain style rotors, i think they were 35 or 40$, not bad, but i needed the rotors right then and there, so i passed up autozone and the duracrap (sorry i like duralast, just not the rotors), and went for pepboys raybestos pg plus. i payed alot more money than i would have buying on the net, but i needed new rotors right there and then, 66$ each i think. bought front two.

you can find cheap rotors of the same brands that pepboys/autozone have on the net, like www.rockauto.com and im sure other places too, and 40$ or so isnt so bad for those brakes. try bremo or raybestos, some people like wagner too, but i dont know to much about those.

didnt want to start a new thread, but i will need new brakes very soon... how much of a diff. is there between oem rotors and brembo blanks and what pads do you guys suggest i get for oem rotors. Keeping in mind this is my daily driver, which i tend to drive spiritedly. I get a dsicount at autozone and some other auto stores like P&A, so are there pads good for the max?
