Trunk woes...

Ok guys my trunk is OEM so are my 1/4 panels never been hit in a way to mess up body lines or anything. For the past few weeks when I hit the unlock button from inside (the door panel) I hear it go clunk. But after it hasn't been opened in a while it takes a little tug to get it to open. Like it does not clunk and automatically go up a few inches like I believe it should. Also my friend told me when going over bumps and stuff my trunk moves up down a little bit. What should I check for and or adjust? Keep in mind the trunk is aligned PERFECTLY with the outer tail lights and I do not want to loose that look as it will look awkward if it was mis aligned.

It could be that the torsion bar(s) has snapped? or perhaps the latch needs to be adjusted.

Torsino bar(s) I think are ok. Car is not in front of me but I'm sure if it had snapped it would be hanging loose and def. would have noticed it. If I adjust the latch will that not mess up the alignment?

Not if the latch is just slightly out of line...

How much play should there be once the latch is completely closed, if I recall correectly I have a little less than an inch of play. I'm presuming this is whats causing the trunk to move up and down when I go over rough/uneven surfaces. What about the trunk not popping up a few inches once I hit the unlock button from inside?

I have had the same thing happen. Usually when it gets really hot. Its more like the rubber seal is sticking to the trunk.

When you have to tug it open, does it feel like something is coming apart mechanically before it comes up, or is it just...'sticky'?

There's a small lever in there that disables the remote-open feature, it's possible it's been nudged down a bit, causing the lock to not entirely release.

Just a thought.

Hey Harris, with the trunk not opening, I get that too...nothing to worry about. As for it moving up and down...maybe the latch got a little loose or something; can't see how it started on its own

Once latched, there should be no noticeable up/down play... at least mine doesn't have any.

Your left rear quarter was hit, thats why the door gaps on the side are pushed in slightly.
But that slight misalignment isn't your trunk problem.

Try adjusting the trunk latch so it closes tighter. Two 10mm bolts hold it onto the rear body pannel.

My left rear 1/4 was NOT hit. The door skin was replaced and the door skin was never put on right even by your shop. It was welded on half way thru and the bondo was quite visible along the edge and the moulding and door trim were never flush with the door.

How do I adjust the lock so that it releases entirely. Yes it feels sticky has felt that way for a while.

Also if I adjust the latch will the alignment of the trunk itself change?

Is there any way I can lower the locking mechanism on the trunk lid or is it only adjustable via the latch in the middle above the bumper?

If it is a dramatic change in the latches' position then yes. You can expect it to change the alignment. Only the latch is adjustable. The trunk lid has a fixed mechanism. It's not that hard to test these things out and then re-adjust till you think it looks right.

Well the cars at the shop I'll see it tomorrow and see what Tilley can do.

Also in reference to me hitting the trunk button from inside and me having to physically move the trunk up instead of it popping up automatically a few inches, there is definately nothing that can be done about that?
