How hard is it to rebuild a 5spd tranny?

Hey guys, I have been having some problems with the tranny lately and was thinking of buying a busted one and rebuild it. So I would like to ask if there is any write up, or if you could give me any tips on how to do it the best way and if I will be able to do it(I mean I have a lot of knowledge about cars but not an educated mechanick) or another option is just to get a 5th gen one? Will there be any differences in shifter sitting, its just a bolt on right?.Any info is welcome!Thank you!

I would like to try to do this myself. I have never done this before, but I am sure I will be able to do it with the good write up.

NmexMAX thank you for the links

Even if you dont know what you are doing, how are you going to learn if you dont try?

I had a tranny go out in a 1992 explorer I owned. I bought the a4ld rebuild manuals and learned how to do it myself.

Took me 3 tries, but finally got it correct. Had to make a few tools to compress the clutch springs, etc in the automatic tranny, but it all worked out. I sold the vehicle and the guy is still driving it today.

yup...thats why i have a spare busted 5spd that's gonna be rebuilt and put on my VQ35. I'll do the rebuild, even though it's my first time doing something like this....I do have confidence I can do it though.

Go for it.

I'm in the middle of one. I have a few pics, but for the most part, you just take it apart, replace what's busted, and put it back together. Make sure the core tranny you have has good gears - bad bearings are ok, but bad gears or heavy gear/synchro wear will make this job much more difficult.

The only trick is getting the shafts shimmed correctly - but if you have a way to mount a dial indicator to touch the end of the shaft, you can measure it easily enough. You just need to take your time and make sure you're getting consistent measurements for each shaft since it does need to be accurate to the .001". Pay a shop to pull the bearings off the ends of the shafts for you, and have them wash the casings in their parts washer.

The bugger is that it's been 3 weeks and I still don't have the shims I ordered from Nissan. Apparently Nissan North America is completely out of stock of some sizes. If you do the DIY rebuild route, make sure you can get the shims in time, and remember that there are multiple combinations of shim to result in the right final thickness (e.g. the manual says to use a .042 and .044 shim for a .086 shimming, but a .040 and .046, etc will also work). Or get thicker shims and pay a shop a few bucks to grind them down to whatever size you need. In any case, the mainshaft and input shaft are usually shimmed right, so you'll only need to order/grind the diff shims.

Thanks a lot, just one question, when I buy a busted one, there is no way to tell if its only the bearings busted or the syncros also unless you open it? Thank you for the help!

Turn the shaft and see if it turns. You can also drain it and look for what comes out - chips of dark, hard, glassy looking metal indicate broken gear, shreds of golden metal indicate ground synchros, and tiny flakes of metal indicate spalled bearings. Or you can just flip it with the bellhousing down and separate the halves. It's pretty easy to see damage when you have it apart, and separating the halves doesn't take too long.

I would not buy a tranny without some guarantee it wasn't crap. In my case, a local guy loaned me a busted tranny and I'm giving him my core when I'm done.

The good news is my parts finally shipped today. With a little luck, I'll have the car running by next week.

Did you remove the shifter detente ball-and-springs first? If not, yes you will f up the shifter mechanism.

Just follow the FSM up to the point where the casing is opened and you'll be fine. But if you ignore that order and just pull it apart, little metal ***** and springs will fall out of place.
