When you put gas in your car, you leave it on?
I always turn it off. all becasue i`ve seen a few pic of a gas tank expolded while the guys putting gas with the engine running.
It was not a pretty sight, the "guy" WAS standing next to the gas door while that thing explode. Roof came off, door came off. i guess the his head gets smaked by the trunk while it flew off and the "HEAD" became a pile : x. i can post a link if anyone wants to see it.

i leave my engine off but turn my car to the on posistion. this was i can sit in my car and listen to music while the car fills up, so i can avoid the cliched and awkward- foot resting on the car hangout posistion while you wait for your tank to fill. also (how ocd is this?!) i prefer my gas gauge to be all the way back up to F before i start driving around; i dont like for it to be still going back up while i'm already going down the road.

If you get in your car while filling up and then get back out all you have to do is make sure you touch something metal not apart of the gas handle or near the filler. You can touch the outside of the door, the roof or multiple other places that are metal. Just don't touch the around the handle area. On that note you shouldn't be on a cell phone either when pumping gas for the same safety reasons.
Also, why would you fill your tank up with the car on? To me it makes common sense and for your safety to turn the car off.

Static really isn't a big deal, nor is cell phone usage (which is prohibited at gas stations in many states). However, both of these are completely regardless of whether or not the car can be left running. I personally shut it down.
Just do what I do, shut the engine off, lock up my car. And while filling up, I go inside the mini-mart to buy gum, soda, and other necessities. By the time I get back, its all done and off I go. No worries about static electricity and everything else.
i turn mine off. if ever a fire does start from static or whatever your NEVER suppose to pull the pump out of you car this makes it worse. the people inside can shut off the pump . most injuries are caused when the person pulls the pump out spraying lit gasoline
leaving the car on will not pose any threat of igniting the gas. the main threat is getting in and out wearing staticy clothes and then touching something thats grounded and causing a spark <-- which has nothing to do with whether the car is running or not. I would not leave it on if i was going in to pay though...
i always leave mine on....dont know why, guess i just like to get in and go (and when its freezing cold out i like to keep the heat blasting so when I get back in its nice and warm)...why would it matter fire wise if you have your car on or not? makes no sense

people somehow get the idea that the engine running is going to make the gas fumes ignite... If thats the case then why doesn't the starter cause the gas fumes to ignites and why don't they make people turn their car off and push it up to the gas pump cause I mean what about the other people pumping around you... The only place where the fumes are going to be concentrated enough to start a fire is right near the nozle of the pump and the inlet of the gas tank. And fires we see are almost always caused when a someone grabs the handle after gas has leaked out and happens to cause a spark. And if theres any wind there is almost no chance of fire.
That said... the main reason they recommend turning off your car is so thieves don't steal it while you're pumping or paying (which is quite common)

But yes i turn my car off. You're also not suppose to talk on Cell Phones either, as another danger other than static.
