Idle Dipping below 500RPMs and then returns...

Folks,

Recently replaced fuel filter as well as the MAF sensor after the MAF almost left me stranded. Replaced it with a new unit. However, I now notice the revs drop down below 500RPMs and then returns to normal (i.e. 700 RPMs) shortly after.

The question I have is, do you know what else can be changed to help alleviate this problem? I've tried FI cleaner, spark plugs are relatively new (40K miles with NGK Platinums). Any advice on how to trouble shoot this would be appreciated. Thx.

Could be a dirty idle air control valve... (among other things)... but I would start with cleaning out the IACV.

Thanx for the info. Is this something that can be easily removed and cleaned? I'll look in the shop manual when I get home. Is this something you did as well? I'll start there for now.

Yes - it's easy - right behind the throttle body, 4 connectors and 3 bolts...

I clean out my IACV and TB every 15k (every year) as regular maintenance ...

You may want to also clean out of the TB.

If those don't fix your problem you might be looking into a host of other problems though. Namely, a vacuum leak, which is what I think I have to fix come this spring/summer. I have done every small thing to try to fix that idle situation you describe, including cleaning of the TB and IACV, and I now believe there is a leak between the Upper Intake Mani and LIM that is causing those idle symptoms in my car. Do the small stuff first, but be prepared for a larger fix.

Check your ECU screws guys - if it's not all the way counter-clockwise, that messes up your idle.

hmmm...will have to try that I guess. Although I hear a whistle when my car idles occasionally...I still think that gasket is bad.

funny you mention a whistle. I too have heard this whistle, nothing to obvious, but to the 'trained' ear (i.e. one who always drives the car and notices everything that's different) it is apparent. Does this imply a possible vacuum leak? I have a hose running from behind the throttle body into the CAI which has a slight bend and crack in it. It is a rather large hose (inner diameter of maybe 5/8 inch). Is this a vacuum line or just some sort of gas-recycling hose?

Thx.

reset your ecu correctly. That fixed my idle after installing an 02 sensor.
