5sp whining noise in reverse

My 5 speed makes a whining noise going in reverse and sometimes 1st gear...is that supposed to happen?

Reverse whining noise is normal...1st gear whining noise is not.

Reverse gears usually have straight teeth instead of spiral teeth, and are usually noisy. First gear should not be nearly as noisy as reverse.

Yeah why does 1st gear sound different than 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th?

A whining versus a smooth vroom...

Has it been doing that since it was new, or do you think this might be a sign of a failing bearing?

Um, first has always made a whining noise. It's not as pronounced as reverse but definitely there and noticeable when your engine is making little noise. This is normal among 5 speeds AFAIK.

i think first and reverse make that whining noise just because they're such low gears... that and i heard reverse wasn't synchronized like the other gears are (like the spiral teeth as opposed to straight ones)

*Sniff sniff* I am sooo jealous. I love that reverse whine sound.

"I heard reverse wasn't synchronized like the other gears are"

I wonder if that is why in most cars if you start the car and never release the clutch and then procede to neutral then you grind.

Mine's been doing that since day one. The first gear whine is not as bad as the reverse but its there. My tranny is still healthy, no bearing-related noises. Just replaced the clutch about 15k miles ago. No problem whatsoever.

Ever since I replaced my tranny (bearing failure), it doesn't whine in 1st gear anymore. In fact, 1st gear now sounds exactly like 2nd gear (no whine). On the other hand, maybe there is a slight whine and I just can't hear it over the y-pipe/GReddy combo.

Hmm

Before and after the rebuild, 1st gear makes that noise.. but it's not a loud obnoxious abnormal noise, it's just distinct that the rest of the gears...

Maybe the level of whining is different here. I mean it's not a bad whine, and reverse is definitely worse than first, but that's because reverse is a much lower gear than first. If the whine is really, REALLY loud, like if you can compare it to another comparable 5spd (maybe even a max?) and see if it makes AS loud of a whine.
