Pics of old tranny with hole in it.

Tilley came to my house today to do the tranny swap on my max. Did it in about 1 hour 20mins and then another hour to get the damn fluid into the tranny because it was so cold and thick. I took pics of the hole that was in it that tilley could put his entire hand into. Ill post pics in a minute. Im so glad to have the car back since i was driven a escort ZX2 haha pos.

Tilley said that one of the pins must have came out and then that caused the differential to do something and then that happend. I was in a parking lot when it went on me thankfully.

I think this was a one time thing. It was easier for him to just do the install in my driveway then it was to tow the car from my house to his place.

What came out of the hole? Housings don't simply explode without something big getting loose and getting smashed around.

What you're looking at through the hole in all of those pics is the differential assembly. There's not much of substance to it that isn't visible in the pics, so I doubt that was the source.

In any case, if Tilley took it with him, I might stop by his shop to survey the damage...

I have seen that before..it happed to my friends 2001 and the dealer replaced it under warranty. When he went in they were like they have never seen anything like that in all the years they have been servicing maximas. They told him to stop whatever he was doing to the car as far as driving. Lost of burn outs and drag racing.

Tilley and I tore it down quick today - that shaft that goes through the differential broke into 3 pieces - and of course the one that started working its way out of the differential housing got stuck against the tranny housing and broke through it in 2 places. Looking at the face of the of the break in the piece of pinion shaft, it suggests a minor flaw in the surface of the shaft that initiated a small crack, and through fatigue it the crack opened up until the torque of driving simply snapped it. From that point, the inertia of the spinning differential pushed it out of the diff and into the housing where it snapped in half again. These kinds of flaws are unavoidable without doing really expensive inspections at the factory, so it falls in the category of 's h i t happens'. Easier driving might have delayed the failure but not prevented it.
