Well it's clutch time for my 98 se. i have desided on the 5th gen clutch setup. but i was wondering is it worth spending the money on a lightened flywheel? what kinds of power gains could i expect to see? is it worth the money? are that reliable? I would love all the advice i can get.

Anyway, I've got a Fidanza, I like it, but I hope it's not what's causing my cranking issue. If it is, Im gona try to fix it, if I cant fix it, Im going back to stock.

 

i started this exact topic yesterday, and it's on the first page of this very forum. i only tell you that because i keep seeing people telling others to try looking around first or use the search (or the free search), and because there are a few responses there too (but not very many).

 

I understand the principal, by lightening the flywheel you decreasing the moving weight of the engine. Moving weight is what creates torque. By decreasing the moving weight, you trading torque for horsepower. Losing bottom end to gain top end. My question is the trade worth it? How much faster does it make the car without other mods?

 

I've had it for the last 6-7 months. Also have a cranking issue, and was told that it has to do with the crankshaft sensor being not fully compatible with the aftermarket flywheel....
But I REALLY do not mind. There are actually dynos (I've posted in the general area forum) on different cars, however (350Z) that show gains 5-8 HP... (keep in mind different wheights of before and after).
The gains are definitely there....
It revs much faster, feels lighter. Blipping the throttle (with aftermarket exhaust) sounds much better lol...

 

your right i should have looked around more before starting this thread. but after looking the other threads it sounds like buying the flywheel is more to change the driveing feel of the car, more than to make horsepower gains.

 

the way i understand it they don't really make more horsepower it's just the lower rotating mass makes the car get to where the horsepower is faster than the stock unit so it feels like more power (though perhaps it lessens drivetrain loss?). the effect of the flywheel lessens as you go up through the gears from what i hear.

 

I think i am just going to leave the stock flywheel, resurface it when the i put the new clutch in. i want to keep the torque it has now, plus i don't want to run into any problems with the aftermarket ones.

 

I love my flywheel....
Really, you could get alot more for the money/ time spent on a flywheel... but I don't regret getting mine....
