Cleaned TB now high idle

Cleaned out my TB Monday, reset the ecu, and now my car stays in high idle. Stays around 1500 RPM, sometimes drops to 1000 RPM about 20% of the time. Don't know how to adjust.

You need to set your idle speed using the black screw on your IACV, the process is outlined in the stickies somewhere.

Had the same problem with mine, and it corrected itself in a week or so.

Likewise! Drive the car for a week or two and see if the high idle goes away. Mine did.

Usually the high idle won't go away until the grime returns to your TB.

The "dellicate equillibrium" of an older car huh?

You mean you finally have a warmup idle?

My car starts up at ~1300RPM and as it warms up the idle moves down to about 700RPM when it is fully warmed up.

I thought this was normal behaviour, if I'm not mistaken.

Na, it goes all the way up to 2k for a sec, then stays at 1500 RPM even after it's warm. After driving it for a while the idle will either come down to 1000 RPM, or it will stay at 1500 RPM, and will vary from stop light to stop light.

I cleaned mine today, idle was a little higher for few minutes or so, returned to normal(750). Why is everyone getting high idle after a tb clean, too much cleaner in the Tb?

maybe u didnt put enough, and not enough passed through. Try to clean it again and see what happens.

BTW - You're suppose to use the whole can.

Whole Can?! lol, na didn't do that, but I might later on if the fix isn't permenant.

I cleaned my IACV, which made it a consistent 1000 RPM, then adjusted the idle the way the Haynes manual describes it. I set it at ~800 RPM, we'll see if it stay's consitent.

BTW MaximaEvolution nice Max, sweet black on black

Thanks Meng.. haha

Yea i know it seems like a lot, but it says it on the can and everything. I work in a goodyear mechanic shop and when i watch them flush systems out I'm like " thats a little much dont ya think?" haha... entire bottles of power steering fluid, huge bottles of coolant. I've added a new rule to my life list, can never be too clean.

If you're getting a slightly higher idle after throttle clean, it's normal. This means the throttle plate is opening more freely. After the car warms up for a while, it should drop to normal. As far as the idle adjustment screw, mark the present setting, and turn about 3 quarters of a turn if the idle continues to stay high after warmup. I used to do this all the time in my '95. It worked out fine. Once the TB gets dirty with grime again, you'll notice the high idle at cold startup will soon fade away.

Whole can?!

God.. when I clean my TB i spray on a tiny bit at a time with the butterfly valve closed so no tb cleaner gets into my intake.

Why would you WANT tb cleaner to get into the intake? Sure, it's combustable... but uh, our cars are engineered to run on gasoline.

I spray a bit in, open the butterfly valve, scrub with a toothbrush, wipe clean with a rag and repeat until clean.

I could probably use the same can of TB cleaner for the rest of my life (and I'm only 22.)

Never had any idle problems yet with any of the TB's I've cleaned in many cars...

It's suppose to get sucked through the entire intake system to clean everything out..If you do it right, a lot of time youll see a lot of black crap come out of your tailpipe (if its clogged with enough gunk)

You're suppose to spray for about 10 secs, revving the motor because it will stall if you dont. And give 10 secs breaks in between.

You're spraying it into your intake with the car running?!

Where do you get your directions?

This 'high idle after cleaning' seems quite logical for a car with fairly high mileage. I'd think it is caused by wear on the butterfly. Even a tiny amount of air getting past the 'closed' butterfly is enough to radically change the idle. The build-up of crap around the edge of the butterfly acts as a seal. When you clean it off, the worn butterfly lets air past, thus the high idle. Either let it run a bit dirty or replace the worn TB components. You might try inspecting the TB-bore very carefully to see if the butterfly has made a groove in it. Remember, on cars with carburettors, those carbs would be junk after 80,000, let alone the kind of mileages many of these Gen4's have.
This reminds me of the old advice about 'decoking' pistons (if such an expression is still used these days; you have to remember, I come from a time when starting handles were a standard car accessory and most British cars only lasted 60,000 before the engine was junk). We were supposed to leave a ring of carbon around the edge of the piston to 'ensure a better seal' (thought the piston rings had that job, but never mind).

intake SYSTEM.. through the throttle body. The cleaner is suppose to pass through the entire intake SYSTEM and then expelled through the exhaust

So youre saying either be prepared to replace the butterfly or dont clean it...
I was planning on doing this when i install the CAI but now im having second thoughts

I'm not a mechanic but I'd have to agree with thisasian and tomservo that flushing all the crud INTO the engine along with a whole can of oil dissolving toluene can only be bad. It's all going to deposit on the cylinder walls, clog the plugs and do who knows what to the catalytic.

I vote for the conservative swish followed by scrub & mop.

The cleaner manufacturer's going to recommend a whole can because they want you to buy more!

Toulene can be used with gasoline to make homemade race fuel if I recall, so it cant be that bad.
