I have a CAI, Budget Y, and just found out this weekend that my catback is rusted out. My question is, if I am replacing with Greddy SP2 SS on the catback, should I consider getting a hi-flow cat as well? What are the pros/cons of a hi-flow cat?

idk the pros and cons but yes if you have a rusted out stock cat i found buy a new high flow cat or a test pipe i wouldnt put a stock cat back in there

 

From what I know there is no Pro to putting on a High Flow Cat. Stock CAT is pretty much a flow througn design. There are many Cons though. Bad for Enviroment, Harder to pass Emmisions, Make car too loud, just all around not worth it. Keep the stock CAT. Just my opinion, it's your car.

 

I think high-flow cats are cheaper than the OEM unit. Well, think of this, you might get 1 whopping HP!

 

I gained 8whp from the high flow from Custom enterprise. I honestly didn't think of any real gain. But I'll take it. I would do it if the emissions are not to strict around you. Its also cheaper.

 

How do you know you gained 8hp? Do you have before/after dyno results?
If it's even close to 8hp I will consider the purchase...but in numerous threads its been stated that there are virtually no gains going from stock to hi-flow.

If you are worried about the emissions standards, just try to find one that is CARB certified. California has some of the strictest emmissions standards in the US, so you should be safe if you get a CARB certified high flow cat. Also watch out for your insides to jar loose in a short amount of time, I heard it happens a lot in high-flow cats

 

The only reason you should buy a hi flow cat is if your stock one is bad and you need a new one. If your current cat is fine, dont get a hi flow. A hi flow costs about $100 for a regular one and $160-180 for a cali one. They WILL pass emissions. It will give maybe .5-1hp if your lucky. They really only benefit on a boosted car.

 

Thanks all, I do not know if my CAT is wasted or not. Oregon standards are strict, but not Cali strict. There is a proposal to catch up with Cali emission specs in Oregon by 2009

no possible way you gained 8 Wheel Hp w/ merely the addition of a Hi-flow cat - thats total BS. Maybe if you added a catback as well but theres no way you could get that much out of merely a cat.

seriously. they are garbage and fall apart. mine (car sound) is junk after less than 2 years of use. the stock cat is 2.5" in and 2.75" out, thats more than the aftermarket ones.

Either keep the stock cat (i have mine on with my apexi ws) or use a test pipe.
