3rd gear grind

i know it's a known problem, when shifting up into third and the sticks more to the left of the slot it grinds, noise and feel. What is it, is it bad, anything to do about it?

I've missed shifts going into 3rd more than any other gear and more than any other car. I've never grinded though. Is the clutch worn and/or fully engaged?

yes, well it would be fully dissangaged, its only when you have the rod to the left too much, as if you tried to go too straight up instead of the uprightup motion.

A lot of the 6 speed trannys have the 3rd gear grind. Mine is one of them. If I shift into 3rd fast at a high RPM it grinds. It goes in OK but it sounds bad. A lot of them were replaced under warranty. At 97k that's not an option for me though. I'm keeping my eyes open for a used 03 6 speed w HLSD.

I haven't heard anything about the 5 speeds having problems though. The 5 speeds are much smoother shifting. My 95 had almost 200k and shifted great.

BTW JaKillz2, did you figure out why the car wasn't running right the other day?

Could be that your synchros are going bad. Considering the part is under a couple bucks, sounds like they could easily get booted. I've heard that it will only get worse if not fixed...

Yeah, it's the 3rd gear syncro. The actual ring is pretty cheap. It's just that the install involves a tranny rebuild. Since I want HLSD any way the easiest thing to do will be to get a newer tranny with HLSD and install it my self.

On a fast high RPM shift you can hear the crunch going into third pretty well. Not much feeling through the shifter but the 02 and up have cables instead of a solid linkage like the 5 speeds. Not much vibration gets passed through to the stick. I'm sure I would feel it on a linkage setup or especially a rear drive where the stick is mounted right to the gear box.

If it's a direct bolt in and has HLSD I would be game. I found a 9000 mile 03 6 speed with HLSD for $1800 to my door. The insall is no big deal for me.

I just put on headers, S-AFC, Fidanza lightweight flywheel and a stage 3 clutch within the last few months. It may be a while till I can justify spending that kind of money on the car again. If I were single, or looking to be single again, I would have done it.

ya but mines a 2k. It does it like every and its not really random it happens cause i have the stick forced to straight up in the 3rd gear slot instead of the upleftup from second and its just like a split second like you push against the gears and then its gone. And you can definately feel it through the ****

6th gen 6spd tranny is better i believe...

don't quote me...but i think it has triple cone syncros for 1-2-3...versus double cone syncros on the 5.5 gens (smoother shifts)...and the most important...the 4.1 final drive
