1-2 Gear Slip After Tranny Flush

At 60K I flushed my autotragic transmission with 9 qts. of Mobile 1 syn atf. Since then I've had the tranny slip shifting to 2nd about 5 times and a few times into 3rd. It certainly isn't slipping all the time and when not slipping it shifts great. I just flushed it last weekend and probably have 3 hours of in town driving on the car since. Any suggestions? I still have about 5 qts of the old fluid. Prior to the flush it never slipped. Was running dino previously.

Mine did it after the dealer replaced the transmission pan filter and refilled it. However it stopped doing it after a day or so and hasn't given any trouble since. Drive it a little more.

Yeah, I was going to give it another week and see if it was getting better or not. Any thoughts on dumping the 5 qts of old stuff back in? I know that sounds messed up, but if it was working well on the old fluid...you see my point. I'm just not sure if it would be ok to mix the new syn with the old dino. thanks

I wouldn't dump the old oil back in. Isn't the reason that you changed the fluid is because it is due?

I had the dealer put in Royal Purple synthethic that I supplied so I really don't think that its the fluid. Just give it a few days and don't drive it hard.

Also, make sure that the fluid is not overfilled. You'll blow a gasket. I only say this because you say you added 9 quarts and took out 5? Is this correct?

No, I took out 9 qts. and put in 9 qts. My fluid level is right on the button.

As for flushing ever 30-40k, ideally yes, but I bought the car with around 55k.

Alright, sounds like you did a great job. I'm willing to bet that it will go away after a little more driving.

Keep us posted as I was going to do a flush w/Mobil 1 soon.

Use Nissan OEM fluid w/ Lucas oil stabilizer.

Best bet take a long drive, about 100 mi of highway driving, resolves the issue or your tranny may be on the way out.

I hope I don't jinx myself by saying this, but it seems the tranny is not slipping anymore. The only thing I did was not drive it that hard (with a few exception). Thanks everyone for the replies.

It won't come back. Good to hear that you had the same problem as everyone else. I guess that the tranny needs some time for the fluid to circulate through the tranny and fill all the areas that the fluid moves through.

It is a MUST to reset the ECU and TCM (disconnect the battery for couple of hrs) after doing a tranny flush, it relearns the shifting in the presence of fresh ATF.

Hope this helps as it does help me, FYI, I reset the ECU with a drain and fill too...

Where did you hear that? That's the biggest crock I have ever heard. Even if the ECU has to relearn anything, it can do it without having to reset it.

So is regular OEM fluid better than redline or mobil 1 synthetic?

I hear that resetting the ECU is a MUST when filling up your windshield washer fluid also. Whatever, I always reset the ECU when I fill up with gas as I want the car to relearn the different fuel that the car is using.

As far as synthethic vs the OEM fluid, I would have to say that the synthethic would be better. When I had my fluid powerflushed at the dealer, I had them replace it with synthethic and they did it with no problems.

It's still not a must! Your thread says that the ECU needs to relearn the new non OEM fluid and that by resetting it, it will help. B.S., I had the dealer fix the trans pan gasket and reuse the same synthethic fluid and still got the 1st to 2nd gear slip.

There is no need to reset the ECU when you do a flush.

I have played around with all kind of ATF fluids, but then my tranny doesn't shift anywhere close to when it had OEM fluid. Remember DexronIII is a replacement in the absence of OEM fluid, but then Nissan and so have other manufactureres spent millions of dollars in coming up with proprietry fluids for their transmissions. They are no fools to spend big dollars to come up with proprietry fluids.

OEM many not be the best base stock fluid but it damn is the one the tranny likes!!!!

How does the OEM fluid differ? I am due for a fluid change and may be willing to go back to OEM, I just wondering what the differences are. Is the trans smoother with the OEM fluid? Does the trans shift faster, etc...
