Wheel bearings..how much play is ok?

I'm getting this clicking, knocking noise from time to time. Most of the time it occurs when I'm turning right, either high or low speeds. It usually is more predominent when the car is cold and has not been driven for a while.

I did the wheel bearing check (hold tire on top and bottom to check for play). There is some play...but the question is how much play means a bad bearing? There is a little play where I can move the wheel a little bit. Not sure if this means the bearing is bad, or going bad so I thought I would post this to find out what you guys think.

I am tempted to just take it in and see what the techs say. But with my D2 coilovers (causing other noise) I doubt they will be able to make a prognosis on the sound. This sound is unrelated to the D2's...I am sure of it.

At any rate...any ideas?

I think there shouldn't be any play at all...even if it's small like you described....dunno too much about wheel bearings tho

when I tried moving my tire from 6 & 12 o clock positions...it won't budge...no matter how much force you put on it...its rock solid!

Ok thanks for the feedback.

Also to note...I have heard that my symptoms may be related to a bad CV joint. How would I know if my cv joint is bad is the boot it ok with not cracks or damage?

I THINK the CV joint is if you can shake it quite a bit by grabbing the from the sides not the top and bottom. I think, I could be wrong.

Edit: spoke to my brother (mechanic), he said it is most def the wheel bearing.

Ask your brother if he wants to change out the bearing for me for cheap.

I'll probably get both front bearings done just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the help.

Had both of mine changed out about 6 weeks ago. From what symptoms you've mentioned, I'd agree on the bearing diagnosis. Nissan really gets you with the pressed style bearings. Was not an inexpensive repair.

Yeah...I looked at the Nissan FSM and saw that press coming into play. I figure if I take it to a third-party place I can get it done at a decent rate. I'll probably end up taking it to Firestone, despite the feedback I've seen on them, they actually have done a good job on my car with other things. Although they do try and sell you every service under the sun....

Yeah he also said that, he said a bad CV joint you will not feel when shaking a wheel, but that could also still be a bearing he said because a bad bearing will have movement in all directions. He told me you need two people to really know what it is, so one person can look behind the wheel and see where it is moving...

You're right, shaking the wheel from 9 and 3 o'clock checks the tie rod ends... I think the way to tell if the CV joint are bad is to check if the boots are ripped, have little or no grease, and the joints are clicking.

if your bearings are bad, is there any noise from that particular wheel? what are other symptoms besides this test and vibration? i get a constant noise from the passenger side and can feel the vibration also.

Your symptoms ( from first thread) sound more like CV joints = clicking turning. Bearings are more of a grind whiring noise rotational ( like bad rotors sound) constant in straight line or turning and more prominent as the car warms up.

ryan, it could most definitely be the CV joints due to the clicking.

I had a clicking/clunking noise turning left and only when I was at part throttle. When I changed out the passenger side axle everything was fine on the outside but the axle was sloppy and had a lot of play. The noise went away with the axle replacement.

Crap...it may be both the wheel bearing and CV joint. I wouldn't be surprised....time to shop around for a good local shop that will deal with it.
