opinions on clutches for 6 speed

I plan on upgrading to a new clutch sometime before summer. Let me know which one you would go with and if you had any experience with any or heard of anything from another orger. I want a light pedal but something that grabs quick. Nothing harsh on the tranny. Listed are the only two aftermarket I've seen for the 3.5 6 speed.

Clutch Masters
2002-2004 3.5L
FX100 Stage I
Part #06-048-HD00
High performance street system
Holding capacity 70% over stock
Heavy-Duty reinforced pressure plate

SPEC Clutch
Stage 1 #SN851
Torque Capacity: 430 ft/lbs.

ACT
Heavy Duty Pressure Plate w/ ACT Nissan Maxima Hybrid Street Disc Clutch Kit 35% 517 ft-lb
Didn't know act made a clutch kit for the 3.5 thanks to JaKillz2

honestly, IMO unless you plan on upgrading your WHP and/or torque, i dont think youll get that much of a difference in performance...you might as well buy a brand new clutch but keep it stock...just my $.02...

so you would just get an oem clutch with an aluminium flywheel or keep the original flywheel also.

i would keep the oem flywheel as well. i heard about the aluminum flywheels warpping as well. any/everything will deteriorate when you abuse it but i think oem parts as far as engine/powertrain as good if you arent adding power. do you plan on adding a considerable amount of power??

I just recently had my clutch go out. Long story short I bought the SPEC 851. At the time it was put in the mechanic felt the flywheel didn't need to be resurfaced. Unfortunately, he was wrong! The SPEC clutch is much more aggressive than the stock and when it made contact with the stock flywheel the "chatter" was almost unbearable. So I took it back to complain about the chatter and now the flywheel was beyond resurfacing due to the new clutch. I was so fed up by this time, because the new stock flywheel was another $460 that I just went ahead and bought the $200 stock clutch to go back in. With that being said, I have a SPEC 851 which I paid over $400 with less than 200 miles on it that I am selling for $250 OBO. The paperwork on the clutch does state the flywheel must be resurfaced prior to installation and it requires a 400 mile stop and go break in period. Both of which I failed to do.

I can say that once I was able to get past the chatter in first gear the response was night and day difference.

I don't plan on boosting or running nitrous but I'm doing all motor for power. I figured that the flywheel would make my 1/4 mile improve and it would free up the extra horsepower from bolt ons.

I think you will be fine with the stock unit....heard it's good for 400ft-lbs

ynot411 is running slicks and has 85k on his stock unit....hasn't had a problem with his....iirc, sr20den ran a 12.8 on slicks on a stock clutch too...heck, even I'm running full bolt ons and my clutch still doesn't have a problem...it's my tires that give out, not my clutch

so in short, the stock vq35 clutches are pretty damn strong....they are cheap too...DaveB has pressure plate, disc, TO bearing, pilot bearing all for like $260 shipped....much cheaper than aftermarkets running $400+

I'll probably get a new stock clutch with an aluminum flywheel. How do you think that will go?

I honestly don't know....if I were you, i'd stick with the stock resurfaced flywheel....I don't believe you gain much hp with an aluminum flywheel....

just save your money and use a stock clutch/resurfaced flywheel setup....i mean the fastest n/a maxima is running this setup....

Exactly! You don't get anymore power out of your motor you just free up the lost power that it would otherwise take to spin the heavier flywheel, thus reducing strain on the motor. Will definately rev quicker...just remember that it revs quicker when downshifting also.

I wonder what the fastest na maxima would've done in the 1/4 with a lightened flywheel and aftermarket clutch.

I want a 6 speed

IMO whether it gives power or not, I wouldn't mind to have it rev more freely

Most manufacturers use organic for stage 1 or 2 then kevlar for the next stages finally moving to ceramic and sintered iron for the race only units. You don't want to mess with ceramic for what you're doing.

Please post EXACTLY why you're going to replace a clutch that performs perfectly well.

The reason why I was asking about the clutch was because I was planning on getting a aluminum flywheel. I figured I would replace the clutch while I was down there. Would our stock clutch go fine with the surface of the aluminum flywheel like a fidanza.
