Stupid question:tranny swap idea
Stupid question:tranny swap idea
So i have a real dumb idea here, doubt its possible but ill run it by you guys,
Buy a 95,96 max 5 speed CHEAP (2k high miles) get its tranny rebuilt (cheap again i know a guy who can do it for like 200) swap it into my car, id have every part id need right there so i think this would be real easy (easy as a tranny swap can be) then take my xtra parts from my auto 98 I30, and swap those into the max, it will be auto then sell this for similar to what i bought it for. What you guys think? is it possible, wiring etc

You do know 95-96 are extremely poor in crash testing... I also think the sound insulation and interior noises are far more problematic than 97+. If anything, buy the 95/96 for cheap and use the MT parts to swap into your I30 auto for an auto-MT conversion.
I like this "I know a guy" bit.
Wholesale price for a tranny bearing kit is $200. Synchros are another $200, give or take. Either your buddy does work for free, or is going to give you a tranny with a very skimpy rebuild. So those numbers are way off.
As for the wiring and stuff, I don't know. Sounds like a lot of work for nearly the same price as just buying a decent 5 speed.

Your right, its a dumb idea. Just buy a used low milage 2k or 2k1 5speed for about 800-900$ and do the swap on your car and try and sell your old auto. Doing a auto->5speed isnt too difficult, but doing a 5speed->auto is way more complicated because the auto trans has a lot of connectors and wireing on it all of which will have to be wired into the old harness. Seems like a lot of time and work to save just a little but of money.
