console swap?

i have a 96 gxe 5spd and hate the 'cup holder' hole in between the seats. originally i was going to try and fab a newer one into mine, but it didnt go the way i planned with fitment and operation. what i was wondering was in the latter years of 4th gens did the console change to accomodate actual cups? or should i just buy one of the old ones that go in the compartment next to me?
