Several months ago one of my 2-yr-olds put some change in the CD player. I caught her after the 2nd or 3rd coin I think -- it only takes a few seconds of attending to the other one and stuff happens... Anyway, it now either does nothing or shows Err on the screen. Radio works of course. Given that there was a little smoke/short when she first did it, do you think it's worth taking the radio out? Any guestimates on how long it takes to do it? Thanks!

Frankly that comment about 'a little smoke' tells me that your CD player has gone to the place in the sky where all good CD players go. Repair is likely to cost you more than replacement.

 

replace it its not worth the hassle of trying to fix it and then having it stop again. 150 should get you a really nice replacement

 

Yeah time to upgrade to a new player, you can get an mp3 comapatible one too!

 

Good excuse to replace the stocker...Just be sure to get one with a flip down face so there's no exposed disc slot!

 

dont forget, if its a bose, you have to replace the speakers too.

 

if its bose, you can get an adaptor for an aftermarket cd player so you can keep the stock bose speakers

 

I agree with the upgrade, heck perfect time to upgrade the whole system .

It only takes about 3 minutes to remove the stock head unit after you've done it a few times. First time it might take you 10 or 15 to find all the screws holding it and the center console in/together.

 

I've got a 3 year old and pennies in my home stereo, & rocks in my VCR & my acoustic guitar.
He also open a dozen eggs & a bottle of parmesan cheese into a pitcher of koolaid yesterday. And last week he covered the house in flour.

You gotta love it.

 

That may slow a kid down now, but in a year they will be smart enough to flip it down.

Any idea where? I was going to replace the head unit but was told I'd have to rewire the speakers. I could do that but it's a pain in the *** if theres a simple adaptor I'd rather do that.

 

go to either circuit city or best buy (whichever is closest and more convenient) and go straight to the Radio Install Dept. and tell them you need an adaptor for a maxima w. a Bose system. Shouldnt cost more than 10 bucks

 

Thanks, I'll check out one of those places for sure. It was a stereo place that told me everything had to be rewired, either the guy I talked to was new or they were trying to hose me....either way thanks for the heads up.

Buy a 99 Bose best one from the 4th gens/ 1st gen I30, all over fleabay, just got one for $45 bucks. The older models 95,96 sell for even cheaper than that most of the time.

I have searched and searched and all i hear is that it only takes 10 or 15 mins to remove the 2003 headunit. Can some one tellme how this is done. i have pennies in mine too and i have a new cdplayer but i do not know how to install. Can someone help please.

 

Try asking in the 5th gen section instead of the 4th gen section.

 

I recommend you try and just slide the pennies out of the cd player before you get a new one. Just take it out and tip it so that gravity might take care of the pennies if your lucky.

Although you should probably just replace the stock h/u, it'll add 5 years to your life. True story.

 

Haha im guessing smoke and a short = dead HU. If its a Bose that sucks because replacment is much more in depth and requires a special harness so you can still use your bose speakers. Taking the whole unit out will take about an hour perhaps a little less if you dont run into snags Oh and when your taking it out, the ashtray needs to be OUT in order to remove it... i fought it for a while until i figured that one out.

If you dont have a Bose, run to bestbuy and have them install it for free + harnesses and plate.
