Did a tune up (PCV, NGK iridinium, mobil 1, new K&N drop, code check) to fix a cold-idle stall problem in my '01 AT (83k). Car obviously drove/sounded better after all that, but the biggest difference I made in responsiveness was to change the fuel filter (1st time). I had it done at Rising Sun in Austin (great guys !!) Texas and they said it was nasty, sorry I didn't keep it and photo it. I always run good quality 91-93 octane too.

Anyway, I'm a fan of the fuel filter change. !!!

Unfortunately, the cold idle issue is unresolved, and isn't throwing any codes. Suggestions to try next, anyone? Runs perfect after a 3 min. warm up, but if I put it in gear right away, it dies. This ONLY happens when it's off for at least 6 hours.

i have a similiar cold-idle stall issue, but with different symptoms. i'm going to swap out my MAF later this week and i'm expecting that to be the cause.

 

So you decided to go with NGK Iridinium instead of the NGK Platinum tip?...any particular reason why?....I ordered my plug replacement plugs for my '03 with 60K from Dave B. The NGK Platinum Tip plugs were not cheap....a little under $9/each if I remember correctly, but thats what he recommended. I thought quality replacement would only run me $3 and some change for each plug, but boy was I wrong?...did I get dooshed? Im about to replace my PCV and fuel filter also...did you have any trouble with either?...

Thats really not a bad price for the NGK Plats. Lowest I've seen them online is around $11 and if you go to Checker/Kragen they want over $20 a piece.

Cool, thanks for the immediate replies guys...I didnt think Dave B. wouldve pointed me in the wrong direction with the NGK Plat. plugs. Sounds like I got a decent deal after all.

 

From what I've been reading I'm wondering if we need to replace the ignition coils. My car idles very rough and sputters after sitting for a long period of time. Thanks for the mechanic referral b/c I also live in Austin, TX

I did a tune up last week, I only needed my plugs changed. He used the oem ones and they were $11 each. He didn't change the fuel filter because it was in a tank and he said he generally doesn't change them. I wish I could change it and see if I see a difference at 50k.

 

The iridinium NGK's were recommended by a friend at Van's Automotive, in Austin. I really like that shop, it's a local non-chain store that's been here for like 18 years or something. I've had real good luck with them. I picked them up for around 42 bucks for 6.

The fuel filter service is right at 100 bucks at Rising Sun Automotive. Great guys there too. They however did do a code check / 22 pt. inspection for my rough idle, and that cost me an extra 40 bones, a little pricey perhaps. The North Shop's service manager drives an immaculately restored silver '74 240Z. Gotta go there just to see that beauty.

UPDATE on the ROUGH IDLE: Okay, this a.m. I replaced my PCV valve. Took a bit of effort, but easy enough. I didn't do an engine on vacuum check, but the old one was obviously messed up, it didn't rattle when shaken like the new one. No change in the cold start idle / engine shut down. However, after the new fuel filter, amsoil fuel treatment (PI), new iridiniums, mobil 1 oil change, the car when warm runs like new. Sweet engine when she's happy!

I guess next I'll clean the throttle body.

Can someone post what a PCV valve looks like as well as the rubber "washers" that can be replaced with it? I ordered one from Dave B. but I think he forgot it. I think he only sent the plugs and fuel filter....Thanks in advance for the pic(s)
