What are these? I seen them under my car and but i really have no clue what they are.

Is there any way to clean the catalytic converter?

Thanks

If i remember correctly those are the flex pipes they allow the engine to move freely from the rest of the exhaust. Also I wouldn't recomend cleaning a cat ive know some people who have broken theirs from trying to clean it.

They are flex hose adaptors that allow for expansion and contraction as exhuast gases flow through them.

Catalytic converters cannot be cleaned, only "recycled". Once all of the catalytic material on the converter is spent, there is no additional surface area for the decomposition of the flue gases to take place, hence why the converter needs to be replaced.

I just replaced my cat with a Cattman FlowMax cat. Included was some documentation saying cats are supposed to last the life of the car, never needing replacement. Since I replaced my worn cat, I'm supposed to declare my reason for disposing of it. The declaration is sent to Environmental Registration Compliance in Iowa. Weird.

I have an 02 sensor and KS code and my car is bogging when i hit the gas. I just bought the car and someone told me if it was like that for a while, it could CLOG the cat.
That's why i asked.

I've never had an O2 or KS code, but I changed them out as part of maintenance at 150,000 miles... didn't notice a performance or mpg improvement. I changed my cat cuz 2 years ago I barely passed smog (HC and NO were borderline). Plus my exhaust smelled metallic, reminds me of sulfur. Didn't get the rotten egg smell tho.

I do notice better response w/the Cattman cat. He claims 6hp dyno'd gains. Plus my exhaust has more of a gurgle at idle, which I'd rather not have... I wanna keep my system smooth and quiet.

Check out carsound's website - catalytic convertors can go bad but it is usually the result of another failure like bad, or tired, O2 sensors, leaking fuel injectors, etc. Hope that makes sense.

That's not necressarly true...Once a engines mileage starts to get closer to 200k, the cats slowly start to disincarnate...BUT, if you drive your car like a grandma, u shouldn't have to worry about replacing your cats...

PS....If you notice your CATS are peeling apart, breaking off, DO NOT TRY REPLACING THEM, without proper liquids/lubricants for the pipes because they will BREAK on u.
